Rena Björnsson
Rena Björnsson of the Oakwood Sun Club Minnesota was a popular nudist model from 1962 to 1966 when the US nudist magazine market collapsed. Her image changed over the years from cats-eye glasses and short hair to a slimmer longer-haired figure.
She appeared in nudist pageants across the US then disappeared totally from sight.                                                   |

In 1955 or so (maybe a little earlier) frontal nudity became legal to be published for scientific, medical or educational purposes. Nudist came under the category or medical or educational hence lot of articles about the history and health benefits of nudism.  In 1956, after a campaign led by Ed Lange, nudist magazines became legal to be sold by subscription to non-members of nudist associations. Effectively anyone prepared to pay for them could buy the magazines. Lange saw this as an opportunity to sell nudism to mainstream America. The result was an explosion of magazines where an avid readership could peruse bush and cock to their heart's content. Virtually every iconic vintage nudist model we care about rose to prominence in the following decade: Diane Webber, Silvia Hand, Rena Björnsson, Rosie Smith, Cécile Allain, Dee Matteson, Lois Hadley etc.   Then in 1965 the boom went bust with a change to the law removing the requirement for scientific, medical or educational reasons for magazine nudity. Magazines could now publish page after page of largely uncensored photographs without lots of supporting articles or any nudist content in the photographs at all. Many magazines in the quasi-nudist category of 'jaybirds' appeared in the late 60s while real nudist magazines began to disappear.    By the time Playboy went full frontal in 1972 real nudist magazines had become as marginalised as they were up to the mid 50s. |
