Celebrity Oops

I know this has been addressed before to a certain extent. Still, the whole world of "oops", and how often the term is badly applied, is a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

An "oops" pic specifically means that a celebrity did not intend to show any skin. There should be a definite logic involved in using the term. View the following examples, if you will:



1) Paparazzi at the Beach - People seem to equate a paparazzi pic with an automatic "oops". This is not so. If a paparazzi shoots a celeb while she sunbathes on the beach (in the above example Charlotte Church) or in her back yard, that's not an "oops". That is a deliberately topless celeb, being shot by a paparazzi (if anything, I'd call these "opportunistic scumbag" shots, but the phrase really doesn't "pop").



If, however, the paparazzi has caught the celebrity (in this case Ashlee Simpson) at the beach, and she just happens to be slipping out of her top, (or, more rarely, bottom) that is indeed an "oops" pic (still being taken by an opportunistic scumbag, but that's just a given).

2) See-Through - When a celebrity isn't wearing a bra, it's a slightly tricky situation. Still, logic prevails. If her shirt is transparent enough to actually see her nipples, it's a "see-through" shot, and qualifies as an "oops". If, however, a celebrity is wearing a top that is really obviously see-through, and allows herself to be photographed, it is not an oops. Here are a couple of examples of that situation:



In the first photo the singer Cher was being professionally photographed. She knew her top was transparent. It is clearly not an "oops". In the second photo Cher was out at a disco (yeah, I know, long time ago). She was in public, then, being photographed by paparazzi. She still, however, was wearing a very obviously transparent outfit. She knew that people could see her nipples, and didn't care. Heck, she wanted people to see her nipples. Therefore, still not an "oops".

If, by the way, you can see through a celebrity's shirt but she is wearing a bra, why would anyone consider that a "see-through" shot? "Ooh, I can see her bra." What is this, the fifth grade? Sorry, just another pet peeve.

3) Pokies - "Pokies" are something that are constantly mislabeled, not only as being "oops", but also as "see-through".



Looking at Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston above, can you really see their nipples? Just because a nipple is pushing against fabric, that doesn't make it a "see-through" shot. Simple rule of thumb (or, er, nipple): If you can't see areolae, it isn't see-through. It's just wishful thinking.

As for "pokies" being "oops" shots... again, did the celeb leave the house and forget to put her bra on? No. She knew that her nipples might poke out a bit, and she knew (or certainly suspected) that paparazzi would be lying in wait somewhere along the route. Therefore, "pokies" pics are not "oops" pics.

4) From the Past - Simply because a picture came from a part of the celeb's past, one that she possibly hoped the public wouldn't discover, does not make it an "oops" pic.



Madonna was less than thrilled when Pl*yb*y (and then P*nth**se) dug up old nude photo shoots of her. Still, she had deliberately posed nude for those shoots. Embarassing? Maybe. "Oops"? No.

5) Nude Scenes - This one I can't believe I even have to mention, but time after time... If a picture or video clip is taken from a nude scene that a celebrity has done in a film, it can not possibly be called an "oops" pic.



For example, Halle Berry knew that she was doing a nude scene in Swordfish (how could she not; she was nude and they were pointing movie cameras at her).



In this pic, however, she is rushing to the set (different film), and the nipple that is on view is most likely not intentional. There is a clear case for calling this an "oops" pic.



Now here's a tricky example. In this outtake from the film The Break Up, Jennifer Aniston is performing for the camera, and was deliberately nude. However, she was of the impression that her nipples would be framed out of the finished picture (she was correct), and that the original raw footage would not be allowed to leak out (she was incorrect). So, is it an "oops" pic? I myself would tend to categorize leaked, not intended to be seen by the public photos as more "opportunistic scumbag" material (really, that term just does not fall trippingly off the tongue; I think I'll call them "OS" pics). Still, there's a pretty good case for calling this an "oops" shot, since Ms. Aniston did not intend to be photographed (or at least printed) nude.

6) Fakes - Fakes are fakes, what's to know? Can't really call them "oops", unless it's "Oops, some guy stuck my head on someone else's body".

I hope this guide has proven helpful. If you post a pic and label it correctly (and post it to the correct thread), you will be doing better than 99% of the celeb websites out there, who lazily slap the term "oops" on almost every photo they put up.

Whilst I agree with your various sub categorising of these pictures, I can't help feeling that the term "opportunistic scumbag" is a little ungrateful. Without them, most, if not all of this thread would not exist. I would even go as far as to say that those screen cappers amongst us would also fall into this category since we scan broadcasts in the hopes of catching celebs in off guard moments. May I therefore suggest the following terms as a potential substitute:

Fluke Photo
