I'm guessing the photographer had the models pose in all sorts of ways from very soft (not too revealing) to all-out legs spread graphically showing her pubic region, including pubic hair before the transition in 1970.

Once the photographer, say Pompeo Posar, developed the film the slides then went to the editorial staff, led by Hefner who had final say, as to which pictures and how revealing they would be, suggesting air brushing if Hefner liked a pic that showed more than he wanted back in those days.

In the case of the large format centerfolds, shot on 8x10 negatives, a series of Polaroids were taken for approval by Hefner before the photographer began shooting with the BIG camera. In most cases the concept of the centerfold was planned in advance and shot on a set at PB headquarters in Hollywood after they moved from Chicago.

Another factor was certainly how free-wheeling the model was. Some reluctantly posed while others where enthusiastic in front of the lens.

In the end it was Hefner's call as to how hot a picture would be published.

I think there would be a large market for PB Ent. to publish never-before-seen full frontal pictures of vintage PMs before the "bush ban" was lifted on their web site.

I'd bet that the PB archives has a lot of photos like these of Lori Winston - Miss June 1964 (as Julie Cron shot by Ed Leja in 1963 that I colorized) of most of the PMs. There are Leja photographs in her PM Portfolio from the Cyber Club and one was used, showing bush, in the special, Playmates - The First 15 Years. It is the last pic in this series. (They colorized, too. The original shot by Leja in 1963 were all B&W, one of the originals that I colorized and posted here).

It should also be noted that shortly after Winston/Cron appeared stapled to the middle of the magazine, Hefner began having future PMs sign "exclusive" 10-year contracts limiting who could publish, photograph or film them not meeting Hefner's standards.

Of course Teri Weigel jumping to hardcore in 1991 after her April 1986 (BTW, the last centerfold stapled - after her PB began gluing the mag) is the most graphic PM in history. After 25-plus years and several massive boob enhancements that frankly looked bad, Weigel has all but quit filming. She also did a few Mustang Bunny Ranch stints in Nevada and last I heard was operating a tourist fishing boat in Florida. It's not a stretch to think Teri provides more than bait on those excursions.

Susan Lynn Kiger can be seen in a hard core blow job to some guy wearing a wolf's head (really) BEFORE her PM appearance in Jan. 1977 in the movie "Deadly Love" or "Hot Nasties" released in 1976 which also had soft core screwing with the wolf.

Other latter day PMs including Victoria Nika Zdrok (Oct. 1994), Lynn Thomas (May 1997), Alexandria (Lexi) Karlsen (March 1999), Heather Carolin (April 2002) all have either posed very graphically (no imagination needed) in either a competitor's magazine or their own web pages.

Zdrok, Thomas (together and Zdrok separately) and Carolin have been videoed in hard core girl/girl scenes. Zdrok has a boy/girl video where she gives a handjob but the rest of the interactions are softcore.

Zdrok's site also has a pretty graphic pictorial with Debra Jo Fondren (Sept. 1977)

None to date have crossed over to join Weigel in the hardcore porn business on video - there is one pic of Zdrok giving head out there.
