I am still rather suspicious, how did the bookies know that he was going to be the favourite and stop taking bets when only a handful of people in the know we were told knew it was Capaldi-this particular secret appears to have been leaked somehow. I am surprised that they have gone for an older man with a very angular face, some might say sinister looking but it remains to be seen whether he can fill Matt Smith's shoes and become popular with the most important 'demigraphic'-the kids!

As I said earlier he doesn't have a gender as hes not human. But having said that, didn't the first doctor have a granddaughter? So if "he" has a granddaughter, then hes a grandfather so you cant have a female doctor, I think?!

Well it's already started. We're getting "oh no not Peter Capaldi" and "he's too old to play the Doctor!" If my memory serves me correctly I remember the unbelievably stupid people who complained bitterly that James Bond was going to be a blonde! Some wag even called him James Blond in the tabloids and of course the classic 'danielcraigisnotbond.com' appeared for those who were anti-blond man playing said role.
I say at least give Peter a chance. The only reason that they kept getting younger Doctor Whos was to appeal to the younger viewers and it will be some time before Peter even achieves half of what Matt Smith did for the role, but he may well turn out to be a really great Doctor-let's see how he appears in the Christmas episode and then make a judgement-after all William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton were no spring chickens let alone Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Colin Baker. Young or old Doctor shouldn't matter to real fans, just as long as he looks good and can act-Peter Capaldi can definitely do that.

When you look at the way they ended the last series with a very sinister John Hurt as a future doctor, I wonder if the Capaldi doctor is going to move the series into a darker vein. Whilst I did like Matt Smith, I really began to grow tired of the Amy and her other half, 'married' couple, along for the ride side story. It may not be politically spot-on, but I do like the return to the Older Doctor and glamorous tomboy assistant (sort of Patrick Troughton and Zoe, or Jon Pertwee and Jo type). There are already plenty of strong women in the series (okay they may be psychotic or have a reptilian heritage and you wouldn't want to upset them!) so I cannot see why there is such an obsession with sex changing.

The original format had an elderly Doctor, with a young female companion (not sidekick) for the audience to empathise with and a young male character to play an action role. This carried on into Patrick Troughton's days. With Jon Pertwee, the decision was made to have the Doctor himself more the action character, hence the young male companion was dropped. It was thought the fourth Doctor would be an elderly character again, so Harry Sullivan was added as once again the younger male action character. But when the comparatively young Tom Baker was cast, he was able to fulfill that role and Harry was phased out.
