Columbo was shown here again on free-to-air TV just recently. I hadn't seen it since initial release, I thought it was terrific.
I just love the gorgeous, beat-up little Peugeot convertible he gets around in,
And the big-name Hollywood stars that seem to queue up to play baddies on the show.

It's easy to forget that Peter Falk was twice nominated for an Academy Award, in his first four movies: Murder Inc. and Pocketful of Miracles.
He was also in an extremely hot movie about women's wrestling, All the Marbles/The California Dolls.

As well as Wim Wenders' classic Der Himmel über Berlin/ Wings of Desire, and his participation in that is an interesting story.

He failed a screen test at Columbia and was told by studio boss Harry Cohn:

Peter talked about playing baseball as a kid:

I remember once in high school the umpire called me out at third base when I was sure I was safe. I got so mad I took out my glass eye, handed it to him and said, 'Try this.'

How sad that Peter Falk has gone, apart from Columbo, remember him from Robin and the Seven Hoods, Anzio and Castle Keep.

God Bless

Yeah, I was reading about what that asshole Harry Cohn said to him. Austrian public television channel ORF (Österreichischer Rundfunk) has been airing Columbo every sunday night since the mid-90ies because the audience measurements are obviously good. The exciting part in this show is not the search for the murderer because he always already knows. It's about how he proves the murderer guilty and after being busted, they always show respect for him in the end. The phrase "I have underestimated you" is pretty common. We never heard his first name or saw his wife though.

God Bless
He also had a small cameo role in one of my favorite films, "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World", he was one of the two cab drivers that drove the people to the park.

R.I.P. Harry S. Morgan

Although he worked on many films, there is very little in the way of info about Harry out there on the WWW. Maybe in Germany they know more. I know he released a book, although I doubt it is written in English. If any Germans have read the book, maybe they could share the knowledge.

The death of Peter Falk somehow passed me by, so thanks to those who have put fitting tributes here. I loved Columbo because he wasn't the stereotypical tough guy. No gun, just brain.

I came here to post my respects to Clarence Clemens, a brilliant musician and truly great man. The only civilised thing to do at this point is to play Cadillac Ranch at a volume that may upset a few neighbours for a brief period.

His first name was Frank.

I'd also like to put in a word or two for Mike Waterson, who was a wonderful singer and who helped to restore folk music to being something for everyone. I remember seeing The Watersons at the Cambridge Folk Festival many years ago and they were tremendous. So, from this Irishman and lover of folk music from all over the world, thanks Mike for helping to restore the credibility of English folk music. I hope that there will be suitable tributes at next month's Cambridge festival and I'll be raising a pint glass for sure.

I was going to post something clever with asterisks but....
No.
English Folk is better for the Watersons.
God bless Mike.
Thanks Ernesto

I think even the studio was surprised how well the show worked.
As you say, Norbert, they follow much the same script, the guest actors are usually hamming it up and going completely over the top. I find it all hilariously funny.
