Born: Miriam Goldberg on 1940 in Kraków, Malopolskie, Poland

She was born in 1940 and raised by a Polish Roman Catholic family when they found her abandoned at a railway station and named Zoshia Zavatski.

They moved to Krakow ut in 1946 representatives of a Jewish organization travelled to Poland looking for abandoned children, and Mr. Zavatski gave her up. Along with 400 war foundlings, she was taken first to a refugee center in Czechoslovakia and then to Aix-les-Bains, France.

She went to St. Pierre, France and then in 1948 arrived in Palestine, then under British mandate, where she was adopted by a resident Haifa couple named Goldenberg. They called her Mara Goldenberg.

She attended a school in a kibbutz and trained to become a teacher.In 1960 a chance encounter with an American photographer leds to her pictures being issued at Israel's leading woman's magazine, Laisha.

She is entered for the "Miss Israel" contest and was runner-up to ”Miss Israel,” Aliza Gur.

She placed second at the "Miss World" contest held in London before going in 1963 to the USA to become a high fashion model and attending drama school changing ger name to Gila Golan; Gila for joy and Golan for the Israeli mountain.
