I saw Boogie Nights in full for the first time a few nights ago (yeah I know, a bit late to that party, lol).

There's been a lot of speculation about the characters in BN and who they're supposed to be based on - Dirk Diggler (John Holmes maybe), Jack Horner (Alex De Renzy?), Jessie St. Vincent (Jessie St. James) etc.

I think we can all agree though that the character of Becky Barnett pretty much has to be inspired by (if not actually based on) Desiree West - if only for the reason that it's virtually inconceivable that the character could exist in the movie were it not for Desiree.

On a similar theme, Mikeleverson spotted that Ms West appears in the Blake Edwards/Dudley Moore movie "10"

Strange, but if you recall, Dirk Diggler mentions Holmes' character "Johnny Wadd" when proposing a new character that he and John C. Reilly's character were working up and trying to sell to Jack (Burt Reynolds) while taking a trip in that van.
Speaking of the Becky Barnett character, although she didn't do h/c, I've wondered if it was in fact Keli Stewart that the director was influenced/inspired by instead to cast that actress to play Becky. The resemblance in my view is startling between those two.

I thought the actress' resemblance (even haircut) was pretty close to Keli Stewart. But as DW did h/c and KS didn't, it might've been based on her. There weren't many prominent black female porn stars back then who did interracial beside DW; only Vanessa del Rio, but she was latin. Personally, I was more aware of KS before I joined VEF. Then I saw the immense 'body of work' DW did.

Exactly. Hence my original post. Was there another US black female performer in the 70s who could legitimately be called a "porn star"? Not that I'm aware of. Can't see the Keli Stewart thing, really. According to iafd she made only a couple of movies in the period covered by Boogie Nights.

Another thing: shouldn't Boogie Nights really be set in San Francisco for at least the period 77 to 79? I guess that's what happens when you get Ron Jeremy (who started on the East Coast in 79) to be technical advisor on a movie dealing with West Coast 70s porn; someone like John Leslie, Joey Silvera, Annette Haven et al would have been a better choice.

It's from 1976 and apparently it was the first porn movie shot in 3D. The sight of DW's breasts coming out of the screen at you must have been quite something! This is a 2D version though. Good quality but it is dubbed into German.

It appears to have been shot mostly in LA, which afaik makes it probably the only time that DW ventured out of the Bay Area in her porn career.

DW has a movie that she star in it is called "The final Blow". It very hard to find she has about three scenes she star in. And she played a nurse helping to find people a city that was bomb.
