My top ten villains:

Number ten: hardly villains, but gay couple mr. Wint and mr. Kidd are still villain enough to give 007 (Sean Connery) a hard time more often than he cares to remember in James Bond, 'Diamonds are forever'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2GHL8VhMjo

Number nine, not really a villain as he is the main character but you would't want to piss him off, Al Pacino as Toni Montana in 'Scarface'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szGbS...eature=related

Number eight, the guy that kept me awake as a kid for many nights, not daring to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and not daring to look behind the door until I used his mugshot as my avatar here for a while :-), it's Michael Myers from 'Halloween'

Number seven, James Bond villain Emilio Largo spoiled the atmosphere on one or two occasions in 'Thunderball'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B20JnEhfyk

Number six, The piercing eyes of Mortimer (Lee van Cleeff) in 'For A Few Dollars More', you know a villain when you see one

Number five, This cop has 'corruption' as a middle name, Harvey Keitel as the lieutenant in 'Bad Lieutenant'. Remember the scene with the two girls driving with a broken tail light?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFvGeMDW7bw

Number four, Gary Oldman's interpretation of Drexl is the kind of badass villain you don't want to piss off on a night out ('True Romance')

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uQFm-Lfcqo

Number three, The infamous showering scene in 'Psycho' made Norman Bates set new standards for horror-villains

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YLlqg9l0s8

Number two, Scorpio made Dirty Harry's life difficult until a short while after this pic ('Dirty Harry')

And on number one: A short but lasting appearance, the enduring image of Christopher Walken as Vincent Cocotti having a chat with soon-to-be-shot Clifford Worley (Dennis Hopper) in 'True Romance'

Oops, forgot one: Joe Pesci as Tommy deVito in the famous Funny-Guy scene in 'Goodfellas' where he asks Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) among fellow mobsters to explain why Henry thinks that Tommy ' a funny guy'.

Actually, Col. Mortimer was an 'Anti-hero' in that film. Lee Van Cleeff was more the villain as Angel Eyes in "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".

Joe Pesci is a versatile character actor, albeit within the confines of a more or less shady Italian American stereotype. I loved his delightful performance in the semi-farcical but witty and clever My Cousin Vinnie. When in straight villainous mode, his performance in Goodfellas was bloodcurdling but is eclipsed by his even more outrageously savage psychopath, Nicky Santoro in Casino. This film is not as good as Goodfellas but Pesci is electrifying as an almost supernatural, demonic concentration of hair-trigger violence. Any mundane object, such as a pen or a telephone, can instantly become a terrifying weapon in his hands and often without the least warning sign beforehand. Even the other mobsters, hardened and pitiless criminals, recognise that Nicky is really special, and not in a good way.

The acting opposite one another of Pesci and Robert De Niro as the much quieter but equally deadly Sam Rothstein is fascinating. On one occasion, De Niro's character soliquises that he assessed his chances of survival from a slightly bad tempered business meeting with Pesci's character as fifty-fifty: however, we can see that Nicky Santoro, too egotistical and too ferocious to fear anyone or anything, has just enough sense left to realise that Sam Rothstein isn't to be taken lightly.

Perhaps a less obvious one but one of my favourites is Michael Ironside as Darryl Revvok in David Cronenberg's "Scanners"

In a film where some of the acting leaves rather a lot to be desired his role as a maniacal telepath has in no small part helped the film achieve its status as a semi sci fi/horror classic.

Joe Pesci is just great. Not sure I want to tell him that though.

More Joe Pesci, not quite as bone-chillingly terrifying but dangerous just the same:
