The Poseidon Adventure: Another of the Stinking Ships movies, almost worth a thread in inself. It was so bad that Gene Hackman was asked in an interview what he thought of it, and he replied that he had never seen it. That was before he got the job at Chelsea, of course.

Thanks to Kiwi for reminding me not only of how bad a movie "The Piano" is, but also of what a miserable time I had the night I saw it. Word of caution: whatever one thinks of Holly Hunter or Harvey Keitel as actors, it's NOT a good movie to bring a first date on!!

I think about the worst movies I've ever seen a lot; like bad girlfriends, they linger with you and traumatize you long after they're gone.

For my list, I automatically exclude the movies that never had a chance of being good (I once wandered with friends, drunk, into the Stephen King adaptation "Pet Cemetery," but what's the point of listing it, since I knew ahead of time it would suck...) and reserve the truly awful films for those that are otherwise by decent or talented directors who have in this instance taken a horrible wrong turn (I'm lookin' at YOU, Woody Allen!) or else movies I saw under the impression they would be good or had received nice notices but turned out to be pristine examples of cinematic crap. So here it goes:

1) Heavenly Creatures (the worst movie I've ever seen, under any criteria)
2) The Brothers McMullen (category 2: treated like a serious film, but utter garbage)
3) Girl 6 (incomprehensible: enough to make you wonder if Spike Lee ever made a good movie)
4) The Woody Allen "hell" trilogy: Interiors, September, and Another Woman--do they count as one pick or three? I don't know, but I'll never get those 5 1/2 hours of my life back...
5) The Piano (thanks, Kiwi!)
6) Vanya on 42nd Street (what did Chekhov ever do to you?!)
7) The Decline of the American Empire (for people who thought bad movies were confined to Hollywood...)
8) The Doors (it's a tough pick, choosing which insufferable Oliver Stone film is the most terrible, but since I never liked the group to begin with, it's a match made in hell)
9) The Hudsucker Proxy (and I otherwise LOVE the Coen Brothers...)
10) Henry and June (originally I listed The Shawshank Redemption, which is also enormously awful, but Henry and June is the worst movie in the category of films which no amount of nudity can justify the price of the ticket or the cost of filming; porn is more entertaining and more artistically valid than this pretentious waste of celluloid....)

I could go on....

I like ship films. I just don't like those ones. I'll take your advice on Ghost Ship though. They remade The Poseidon Adventure with Wolfgang Petersen directing, but I won't be seeing that one. Das Boot- now that's a great movie.
I think the disappointment is the major factor in all this, because we are hardly going to go to see something we don't expect to enjoy, certainly not at the cinema anyway.
On the other hand some movies are so incredibly bad they are actually enjoyable and a lot of fun. An example of this would be those Japanese sci-fi movies of the 60's and 70's, using Matchbox toys and other hi-tech special effects. A favorite of mine is "Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELDVjutzan8

Yes when actually it's of the director taken three months after post-production , the investors drowned him in sulfuric acid and used that poster image as a warning to future talentless creative artists with "A vision "

Now like the rest of you, I love my significant other dearly. And usually I can endure most of the movies she talks me into taking her to. But about five years ago she made me sit through about hour of this crappy movie before she couldn't even take anymore. The fact that it had such a good cast really made it a pisser.

Default Ghost Ship

Hate to say it folks but I quite liked Ghost Ship especially with the twist at the end.
I also like DeathShip which is another haunted ship story and look at the covers. I am proud to have both in my collection

I suppose I could get help to stop me buying DVD's based on spooky looking covers but think of all the fun I'd miss,

One really bad one I watched again last night Night Train to Terror - it's got it all crap songs -pay special attention to "Everybody But You", lousy acting, bad special effects and CAMERON MITCHELL......result!

Even by my poor standards this movie struggles to maintain my interest for long but it's always there as a special treat and that tune stays in your head for days afterwards.
