Default converting movie formats

Hello again,
Thanks Dub and all for your help in here.
I can edit .AVI w VirtualDub and MPG w VideoReDo.

** Now I need help w WMV files - I have about 50 movies I really only want a scene or 2 from each.
Should they be converted to .AVI first and if so which program should I use for that (free?)
I used up a trial version of BlazeMedia a while ago. It was easy but I had very little use for it.

If I do not need to convert but just edit - which programs do you find the easiest? Again, I am looking to cut scenes and discard the rest.

Thanks!!

If you want to edit WMV's just use Windows Movie Maker that comes with Windows XP and use the Make clips feature.

You have got it , it is standard on all machines running XP2 or 3. Click start, then programs and look for it in the list, even check Accessories.

MovieMaker should be in the Program Files directory and is a quick and easy tools for editing.

IMO it has one drawback : it always recodes and you can only choose from a fixed set of resolutions for the end result.

If you simply want to cut scenes from a wmv or asf file try asftools.
It has been around for a while now but it is still most useful for cutting, joining and converting. It can also repair (to a point) damaged wmv/asf files.

Just g**gle for it.

I'm with zorin on this one. I've been using asf Tools for years. It's quick, easy and accurate. MovieMaker is s-l-o-w and impairs quality. I've used both and wouldn't touch MM with a bargepole.
asf Bin Master is better for joining files.

If you use moviemaker then you're having to go through an encoding process to produce your vid.

Give Asfbin a try. (freeware)

It can handle Asf/Wmv files and can repair some damaged ones.

Today I clipped a WMV with Asfbin and in worked perfectly, without re-encoding. I prefer it to Asftools.

Some wmvs according to their encoding can be transferred into virtualdub. If they can't, another easy way to do it is use fraps. Open the movie, start fraps and go to the part of the clip u want. When finished, the converted fraps file will be where you want it eg. desktop for convenience. You can then transfer the fraps saved file into virtualdub for easy editing with NO loss of quality from the original. You can also try camtasia studio which will record every darn thing you can think of.
