defragging

How often do most of us defrag ? I was doing my system every month, but not sure if that's best. Windows system says you should wait until fragmentation is over 10%. Any input would be appreciated as I have been given different advice on this.

I use CCl**ner and Gl**y Utilities. I defrag and optimize once a week.
I also run a disk check using the one touch maintenance of Gl**y but not on solid state drives. In 5 years or so have not had a problem on multiple computers. If fragmentation gets above 1% I defrag.


However there should be 10 - 15% free space on the disk for defrag to work.



However I have never see recommendations in writing

I don't very often defrag.

I often clean my internet history, and sometimes do a "disk cleanup".

When my pc seems slower than normal, I may run the defrag tool and see what it says about the amount of defragmentation, and decide what to do then.

If I decide to do a defrag, I save all my pics and vids etc. to cd/dvd and then delete them from the pc, I then set the paging file to "0" and re-start. I may sometimes cut down the "system Restore" points to only 1 or 2 instead of the X-many that it's got to.

(Occasionally I next set a "checkdisk" (using the one in Win XP) to run at the next start up and then shut down and start up again.)

then I run the defrag tool. This defrags the drive and includes the space that was used for the paging file.

Once that's done I reset the paging file and do malwarebytes and kaspersky scans and then set a restore point.

I've read that you don't need to defrag an SSD, only HDs. I use the Disk Cleanup tool that comes with Windows more often than I defrag my HD.

Regularly, probably every two/three days run ccleaner to take away the crap. Defragged yesterday (4% fragmented) and it has really sped things up.

That's correct. De-fragmentation joins files together that are distributed across the disk. Also free space is available in larger chunks afterwards. This theoretically speeds conventional HDs because files can be read and written without additional moving and repositioning of the head. Since SSDs have no moving head it does nothing for them. On the contrary, it may hurt the drive as they only can be written a limited amount of times.
But with todays modern file systems and large disks I doubt there is much benefit with HDs either.

Just defrag once a month or if it shows more than 10% needs to be defragmented. Defragging at less than 10% often takes longer. Once a month is fine.

Only if the PC slows to a crawl and everything else has failed

Same goes for cleaning out so called crap with cleaners or tune-up utlities
- only when theres a real problem

As i'm not a heavy downloader , deleter or user of freeware the benefits of a defrag are minimal

You want a real performance boost - max out your memory (Ram) or buy an external hard drive and leave your PCs HD for the system etc - a goodway of protecting your content from ransomware - they hate encrypted external hds

I've been using MyDefrag for years with a customized script. I also use Puran if I want to optimize at boot-time. I run them each about once a month on the C: partition; other partitions and external backup drives I rarely bother with.

Works for me.
