The first LP that I ever bought. Nobody bought Albums in those days only singles. Unless you were rich. I had to work, beg, steal and borrow to get this one.

Green River by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Or nowadays. The Main Man. John Fogerty.

Bryan Ferry Boys And Girls (Virgin, CD, 2000)

Having at last laid
Roxy to bed with its final, intoxicatingly elegant albums, Ferry continued its end-days spirit with his own return to solo work. Dedicated to Ferry's father, Boys and Girls is deservedly most famous for its smash single "Slave to Love." With a gentle samba-derived rhythm leading into the steadier rock pace of the song, it's '80s Ferry at his finest, easy listening without being hopelessly soporific. As a whole, Boys and Girls fully established the clean, cool vision of Ferry on his own to the general public. Instead of ragged rock explosions, emotional extremes, and all that made his '70s work so compelling in and out of Roxy, Ferry here is the suave, debonair if secretly moody and melancholic lover, with music to match. Co-producer Rhett Davies, continuing his role from the latter Roxy albums, picks up where Avalon left off right from the slinky opening grooves of "Sensation." The range of people on the album is an intriguing mix, from latterday Roxy members like Andy Newmark and Alan Spenner to avid Roxy disciples like Chic's Nile Rodgers. Everyone is subordinated to Ferry's overall vision, and as a result there's not as much full variety on Boys and Girls as might be thought or hoped. The album's biggest flaw is indeed that it's almost too smooth, with not even the hint of threat or edge that Ferry once readily made his own. As something that's a high cut above the usual mid-'80s yuppie smarm music, though, Boys and Girls remains an enjoyable keeper that has aged well. (AllMusic)

Asia XXX (Avalon, CD, 2012)

Celebrating 30 years since the release of their 1982 debut album,
Asia's 2012 full-length XXX is also the third release to feature the original line-up, who reunited for 2008's Phoenix and 2010's Omega. Once again showcasing the talents of lead vocalist and bassist John Wetton, keyboardist Geoff Downes, guitarist Steve Howe, and drummer Carl Palmer, XXX is a rock tour de force that disproves the notion that rock bands get worse as they get older. In fact, as with Phoenix and Omega, XXX is a strong follow-up to both of Asia's first two albums and, while never sounding dated, smartly sticks to the band's '80s prog-pop sound. In keeping with this aesthetic, the album even features Roger Dean cover art reminiscent of his 1982 serpent on the band's self-titled debut. These are bright, pristine productions with a bit more of a pop-leaning sensibility than the slightly harder rocking Omega and more prog-oriented Phoenix. As with much of Asia's work since Wetton's emergency heart surgery in 2007, there is an ever deepening maturity and emotional weight to the band's songs. Which isn't to say they were lightweight in the past. On the contrary, Asia have always displayed a knack for balancing pop radio melodicism with serious and universally relatable lyrics, as on their classic 1982 anthem for middle-age ennui, "Heat of the Moment." On XXX, songwriters Wetton and Downes, while less concerned with disco hot spot fatigue, and more preoccupied with the fragility of life and the emotions it brings to the surface, are nonetheless still at the top of their pop music game. For his part, Wetton sounds ridiculously good, having lost none of his robust and burnished vocal chops over the years. He also seems to have spiritual matters on his mind and songs like the propulsive "No Religion" and the dramatic "Faithful" find him and co-songwriters Downes and Howe investigating the nature of faith, belief in a higher power, and a lack thereof. Similarly, on the elegiac ballad "Bury Me in Willow," Wetton takes a cathartic stance on living a "Life of conflict." He begs, "When I'm gone, do this thing for me/No red, no white and blue, no scepter and no cloak/Just bury me in willow, not in oak." The song, as with much of XXX, has a bittersweet, poetic vibe that matches a rousing melodic theme with a tone of peaceful resignation. Which shouldn’t suggest that Asia has grown soft and dropped the rock from their prog. In fact, as on the arena-ready "Judas" and the sparkling "Face on the Bridge," the band let loose with the double-barreled attack of Howe's mile-wide guitar lines and Downes' glass-cutter keyboard hits. In 1982, Asia caught the pop/rock pearl and 30 years on, XXX shows the band is still flying high, having never stopped riding the dragon's wings. (AllMusic)

Joaquín Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez , Fantasia para un gentilhombre, Concierto Andaluz [Pepe Romero, Neville Marriner, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields] [1976 -79] (Philips, CD, 1994)

The Concierto de Aranjuez is a composition for classical guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Written in 1939, it is probably Rodrigo's best-known work, and its success established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the twentieth century.

The Concierto Andaluz (Andalusian concert) is a 1967 work by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo for four guitars and orchestra. The piece has three movements, each having a blend of impressionistic Spanish guitar music with that of baroque influence. It was commissioned by Spanish guitarist Celedonio Romero and first performed by Los Romeros and the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Victor Alessandro in San Antonio, Texas, USA on 18 November, 1967.

Fantasía para un gentilhombre (Fantasy for a Gentleman) is a concerto for guitar and orchestra by the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. It is Rodrigo's second most popular work after the famous Concierto de Aranjuez. The four movements were based on six short dances for solo guitar by the 17th century Spanish composer Gaspar Sanz, taken from a three-volume work (1674, 1675, 1697) now commonly known as Instrucción de música sobre la guitarra española (Musical Instruction on the Spanish Guitar) (Donis 2005:75). Most of the movements retain the names that Sanz originally gave them. Rodrigo expanded on Sanz's themes to produce a work lasting more than 20 minutes.

Rodrigo composed the concerto in 1954 at the request of guitarist Andrés Segovia, who evidently was the gentilhombre referenced in the title. Segovia took the solo part at the premiere performance on March 5, 1958, in San Francisco. The San Francisco Symphony was conducted by Enrique Jordá. (Wikipedia)
