Probably more I can't remember

As I recall, Australia had a referendum some years back on whether to replace the British monarch as their head of state. However, instead of an elected leader, what was proposed as an alternative to HRH was some faceless appointed official whom virtually no one had heard of. I cant remember his exact title, he's some sort of governor who presently represents the crown in Oz.

It's my understanding that if the Aussies had been offered an elected head of state the vote would have been an overwhelming yes. As it was, they felt the alternative was so unpalatable they had no option but to vote it down. In other words, the referendum was rigged.

Sorry but I have to point out a typo in your post, Ing
You typed OBE (Order of the British Empire)
I think you meant to type OBN (Order of the Brown Nose)

As Victoria Coren said about TV coverage these days, "They just make it as though everyone's so stupid, and they're not making it for themselves; they're making it for some imaginary idiot!"

What was the cost? I read somewhere it was 32million quid. I thought Dave and Nick were skint the "Windsors" should have at least paid half. But they are struggling these days to heat their palaces my heart bleeds...

I think it was the golf commentator Peter Alliss who said something profound about the art of commentating.
It was something along the lines of sometimes the visuals are enough, they don't need someone to narrate the bl**dy obvious.
I could have happily watched 99% of the river pageant with no commentary at all. A few pertinent comments would have been fine.
The BBC coverage was so f***ing patronising.
Hope their new Salford HQ gets vandalised.
