Genuine thanks come when people arent being told what to do

How you word it is pretty important

Rather than asking for thanks in extortion mode simply saying

"I have more to post if theres any real interest in the material"
in the post makes more sense to me

Sometimes there isnt any real interest as one VEF member I recall spent a small fortune buying a certain models sets uploaded them all in the hope of others posting theirs

Turned out there wasnt anymore...got very few thanks and left if I recall correctly

Best to let the people decide if their going to thank or not unless you enjoy a backlash

I think the uploader can see a discrepancy in the amount of downloads from the filehost compared to the aknowledgment of their efforts on the post.
Eventually this probably stops a lot of people bothering with the considerable effort of ripping/encoding/uploading. In the end the loser is everyone.
It's not hard to click the thanks button and it keeps the ball rolling.

I use it to thank people for an interesting or funny post and also to see what I've downloaded. I think that with some people who don't speak English they might not know what the button means (far fetched, I know); but from the reluctance of some people to give thanks you'd think you had to pay for giving them, eventually.

There is another download site where you are encouraged to give thanks, but there is no button: and like someone said before, you get threads with one download and then a load of thanks posts: I just felt daft adding to that and bumping the thread up, but also mean for not doing.

But I also want give more than a "Thanks" sometimes, and I feel a bit mean not doing: there are some posters who do amazing work: if it's a film, there is a full synopsis, review, etc, and these seem to me to be worthy of more than hitting the thanks button. Once or twice I have done more, and wondered if I'm annoying anyone (I make sure only to do it when the thread is towards the top of the first page: and with the posters I'm thinking of, they always have a posting near the top of the first page).

personally i choose to ignore all of them

If I like it I thank if I dont I dont

I definitely try and avoid hosts paying cash that have a record of treating their users like fools
ie allowing over posting to the point where free users are locked out for long periods

The latest one being rapidgator - epitomises everything thats wrong with filehosts that pay cash

This has come up in a number of threads over the years

Guests for certain sections can download
but cant thank because their not registered

So anyone using the gauge of downloads v thanks received
is always going to have a distorted view

I've said it numerous times but you post simply to share

Thanks are little more than a token gesture the real reward is being able to access other content you dont have etc

This is what I like to do, being the friendly sort of bloke I am and loving a laugh,

Sometimes it's kind of obvious who the posters are that just beg for a thanks and might even get off on it,

I seek out their posts, thank quite a few of them, then when the forums quiet and I've no modding to do and can't be fucked posting a week or so later, I'll go and remove those thanks I gave

If a thanks is removed does the op's overall thanks amount drop by one or does it stay the same?

Yes it does drop, it's half the reason I do it, so the thank me wankers might notice it's dropped
