Default What are they for, those strips of dots on windows?

What are they for, those strips of dots on windows? You don't see them much now; they used to be on the edges of most car, bus, coach and train windows. They were always black, and got smaller toward the inner edge of the strip.

I`d have thought you`d be asking a much more pertinent question.

Because yes i know the thing is devilishly well hidden , but if you lower your eyes away from everyone else`s generous contributions, you`ll notice it`s actually bottom right just near the quote button , best of luck finding it , although please PM me if you get lost

Default Window dots

The ones that are still there when you have sobered up are date codes. A good check on the age of a car.

I was a panel beater/welder for many years and I have not a clue what you are on about Tinted car glass had a strip of black dots. But why I don't know. You should try a car forum for an answer.

Quote:
When they apply that black edge to the glass, manufacturers sometimes get creative. For example, when I look at the windshield on my car, there is one place where the black edge is not applied – it allows people to read the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). And then, up around the rear view mirror, there is an array of dots. These dots are put there to cut the amount of light coming through the glass in half around the rear view mirror. It’s done to cut glare and backlighting around the mirror, and also because the little drop-down windshield shades can’t shade the area around the rear-view mirror.

On other cars, there may be a dot pattern all the way around the edge of the windshield. This is a way of breaking up the straight edge – it’s cosmetic, in other words. Some cars have it, some don’t.
