A bit of a stab in the dark, but I am guessing this might be Illustrious Corpses (1976): an Italian film starring Tino Carraro and the multi-lingual Max von Sydow?

not Les Miserables - nor Illustrious Corpses - though the year of production is only one year off of the right film.
No one can identify the back of the head of the officer to the left? That would be too much of a clue to give away. As to the film being a stinker, it did receive a few bad reviews, but not all were bad. Just checked Amazon.com - buyers there list it at 4 of 5 stars. That's indeed a great openening for a film! I watched the movie many years ago (back when Terence Hill was a huge star) and haven't re-watched it since then. Bought the dvd a couple of years ago though, so maybe it's about time to give it another chance.

Well you got me stumped. Looks like a young Liz Taylor and the boy a D Carradine or J Woods young.
