Lifting your visor up to be recognized when wearing armour, was the origin of the modern military salute.

Your opponent came from the left hand side, your lance went over the horses neck to the left towards your opponents left hand side, hence the reason that armour is usually thicker on the left side then on the right, and locks and fastenings were usually on the right hand side.
That is also why most countries drive on the right hand side of the road.

Heh heh well in reality a young Konnie Huq and her school friend appeared on Blockbusters but lost. Apparently she had sat on Bob Holness's knee as a younger girl at a fete.
