Fair question. The background is that the British had already taken a hammering from the Ottomans in Gallipoli, and wanted everyone in the Middle East against them. They didn't need to offer incentives to the Arabs, because they were fighting already. Now they wanted the Jews too -- not necessarily on the ground, because they weren't very numerous, as Rupert shows -- but because of their influence elsewhere

Needless to say, the British had no intention of honoring their pledge, and at the time had no means of creating a new state anyway. It was hot air for one purpose only -- winning the war. This is pretty much mainstream opinion among serious historians

That's true.

I was thinking only today that the so-called Arab/Israeli question has been an issue for all of my 60 years of life. My mother says she was raising money for poor Africans when at primary school in the 1920s. (Big sigh!)

That asteroid they've been promising us is long overdue.

I'm sure. It remains almost the least productive subject on any discussion board on the web. If I was VEF owner, I would ban it this week

I do not doubt that VEF and other boards will be talking about the unresolved Israel - Palestine dispute long after all of us are only noticeable as entries in the register of deaths. I would mention just in passing that Great Britain is probably the only western or European power which did not support the foundation of Israel; and had Britain been able to muster the resources necessary, she would most certainly have crushed the infant Israel using brute force, especially after the bombing of the King David Hotel. It is a great pity we could not do this.

However, that is past praying for and Britain quite correctly recognises the legal existence of Israel. The Palestinians had the chance to reach a negotiated settlement with Israel but couldn't reconcile themselves with it; they will never again be offered terms remotely as good as those which they turned down. So we will constantly noticing new bad news week in / week out; but it will only be endless permutations of the same old same old.

Greed is a horrible human behaviour, but resentment and vengeance surely are as horrible.
The most exacerbated form of resentment and vengeance is the vendetta.

Couldn't fail to notice the rain and thunder & lightning again this afternoon and this was the day that they came to put new double-glazing in(in just 6 hrs) luckily it started after they had put the last bit of glass in and sealing it. These new windows are supposed to cut out more sound and keep heat in during the winter and of course dissipate the heat during the Summer. We shall see what happens.
