Call Me by Your Name (2017) - Oscar bait - Gay alert
Just got back from watching it at the theater, let my date convince me to go see it even though I can't stand gay themed flicks, never seen Brokeback Mountain or Moonlight nor planning on to but i enjoyed this one (guess the fact that it was shot in Italy played a major role.)
Synopsis : In Northern Italy in 1983, seventeen year-old Elio begins a relationship with visiting Oliver, his father's research assistant, with whom he bonds over his emerging sexuality, their Jewish heritage, and the beguiling Italian landscape. It's up for best picture oscar right now. A movie that would be right at home in some other thread we all know (wink wink nudge nudge) but given the cinematography, acting performances and striking landscape, it deserves to be seen and appreciated for what it is, a quiet drama. Stars Armie Hammer (Social Network, Blackout), Timothée Chalamet and Michael Stuhlbarg. At its core, it's a coming of age story, romance story, kinda tragic that just happens to be between two males. It's got striking locations (italian countryside !), solid directing, great performances from the two leads and it really captures the time frame of the 1980's and the confusion of being a teenager. This has possibly the greatest closing shot I've seen in a movie in a freaking long time. Once the screen stopped, I literally went 'wow' and i don't do that often.

MCU pt 12
Ant-Man (2015) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478970/ At last the last of the original Avengers team make it to the big screen Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne, Ant-Man and the Wasp. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) is edged out of running his own company by the ruthless Darren Cross and his Yellowjacket project, a plan to shrink soldiers to the size of insects. Pym wants to protect his original plans and when burglar Scott Lang is persuaded to break into Pym's home, unknown to Lang it is part of an elaborate plot to stop Cross's plans. I wasn't sure what to expect of this film when it first came out but I loved it, I am now watching it on Blu-Ray, it's funny (especially the scenes with Michael Pena as fast talking Luis), it's clever and the effects sequences are spectacular. It even manages to squeeze in the story of the original Ant-Man and Wasp and how it seemed to end in tragedy as well as an appearance by The Falcon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfOZWGLT1JM

The Naked City (1948)
Opening sequence During a hot summer night in New York, a duo is shown killing Jean Dexter, a model, and making her death look like an accident. But medical examination of Dexter's body reveals that she was murdered, making it a homicide case. The investigation is led by Lt. Dan Muldoon (Barry Fitzgerald), an experienced detective and humorous Irishman, and his young partner, Detective Jimmy Halloran (Don Taylor). They question Dexter's housekeeper, Martha Swenson, who tells them that Jean was seeing a certain Mr. Henderson from Baltimore. Clues discovered at the scene, like a bottle of sleeping pills, lead them to Dr. Lawrence Stoneman (House Jameson), who prescribed them, Ruth Morrison (Dorothy Hart), a former co-worker of Jean, and Frank Niles (Howard Duff), who's caught lying about pretty much everything. The Naked City may not be among the best films ever made but it's one of my all-time favorites. Exceptionally unique for its time, Jules Dassin's first masterstroke (not his first film) is a blend of police procedural and film noir with a social commentary. Certainly not the HUAC's favorite movie, although it's social dimension isn't quite obvious or even intentional. What you get to see are authentic people in authentic places. All scenes were shot at original locations and not in some fancy studio in Hollywood. A timeless masterpiece. |

MCU pt 13
Captain America: Civil War (2016) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3498820/ Opens with a flashback involving The Winter Soldier and an event that ties him to Tony Stark Whilst countering an attack on a weapons in Lagos, Nigeria by HYDRA agent Brock Rumlow (Crossbones) the Avengers accidentally hit a building killing several civilians. As a result the UN introduces the Sokovia Accords which effectively put superheroes under UN control, they have to agree to these accords or effectively be outlaws. The Winter Soldier subplot as it unravels accentuates the existing differences between Iron Man and Captain America, the events in Sokovia as portrayed in The Age of Ultron are brought home to Stark when he is confronted by a grieving mother, having Helmut Zemo as the main villain of the piece is a nice touch with the family name having a long history in the Marvel universe. When a UN meeting in Vienna is hit by a bomb which kills the King of Wakanda, The Winter Soldier is framed and the differences between the two sides erupts into full scale conflict. The aftermath of Vienna attack also introduces The Black Panther into the MCU along with a youthful Spider-Man and Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). There is so much crammed into this film, even the funeral of Peggy Carter when Sharon's speech hits Captain America full on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FkTybqcX-Yo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKrVegVI0Us

Watched Gifted (2017) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gifted_(film)
Good film, Chris Evans is excellent as the uncle trying to do right by his niece. The little girl is adorable - McKenna Grace - sure she will be in more films. One of the evil old ladies from Rome plays the grandmother - Lindsay Duncan - and she plays her role well too. Octavia Spencer plays a family friend and has a great line - "And I'm supposed to believe you know what you're doing. You couldn't even find a white lawyer." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7CAjpdRaXU I'd give it 4 of 5 stars - would rate higher if Jenny Slate dropped her top. |

GAME NIGHT
Board games, video games any type of games are the foundation for the relationship and love between Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams). When Max's brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) who seems to one up Max in everything and suggest they change their group game night to something a bit bolder something fun becomes even funnier. First there were some ultra predictable moments right from the start, but thanks to some sharp writing from Mark Perez and direction from John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and a beyond capable cast the movie is able to leap over its predictableness The cast including:Jason Bateman,Rachel McAdams,Billy Magnussen,Sharon Horgan,Lamorne Morris,Kylie Bunbury,Jesse Plemons and Kyle Chandler work well as an ensemble, and when they are paired off. The film also has several great cameos. There are great rapid fire one liners, sight gags and oh what was really surprising were the great visuals, and pulsing soundtrack The movie was completely aware of itself, knowing when to end a running gag that pays off and when to say hey we know we just hit you with this twist several times so were going to end it here. So aside from maybe a dull moment or two and the aforementioned predictable turns this was a really good, very funny February surprise. Scale of 1-10 an 8½ Annihilation In Annihilation Director/Writer Alex Garland melds together great themes from horror movies like The Descent and some classic Sci Fi films. For the most part this blend works as this story of a group of military scientists who enter "The Shimmer," a mysterious quarantined zone that is full of mutating landscapes and creatures. The cast which includes :Natalie Portman,Jennifer Jason Leigh,Gina Rodriguez,Tessa Thompson,Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac are completely capable. Garland places the audience with the scientists.Scenes were filmed in a certain way in which it felt like i was actually in the film. I was as curious and mesmerized as the scientists were as the beauty of"The Shimmer entrances them and the deadly creatures prowl around them. There are some scenes that were absolutely terrifying and not for the faint of heart. Hats off to the sound mixers and editors. The film provides a wonderful visual spectacle. Some interesting things are brought up and reflected on but unfortunately are never spoken of again. There is a scene in which the SFX was a bit choppy, and there is a predictable turn. In the end for such a thought provoking narrative the film ends up in a pretty basic been there done that place. Not a perfect movie but not one i can dismiss either,im glad it has sparked some great conversation, and i hope people check it out and share their opinions. Scale of 1-10 a 7½ |
