Not much has changed. I had the assistant principal of our school tell me "Don't even think that" in response to a comment I made in March 1967. Mind you this was a selective high school dedicated to preparing students for college. I was in the top group where virtually all of us qualified for scholarships. Those who didn't came from families too wealthy to qualify for any type of aid.

Back to Oregon for today's bit, courtesy of an article in the New York Times.

Brown Hope, a local activist organization in Portland, held a "reparations happy hour" at a local pub. This event was open only to people of color who received money upon arriving, yet supposedly was funded by guilty white people who weren't allowed to attend.

Event organizer Cameron Whitten, the 27-year-old activist and brain trust behind this event, said it made attendees feel as if their pain were valued and understood. He also hoped the event would draw attention to reparations, the concept that black people should be financially compensated for the generations of trauma that preceded them.

So free drinks make people think their pain is valued and understood.

Pain? Trauma? From what? Something that happened over 150 years ago?

I am watching as a bunch of young women pile on Morgan Freeman for "creepy looks" and "lewd remarks." Rather than make me think less of Morgan Freeman, they have reminded me of the fate of poor Emmett Till. Really, these girls (can't call immature females women) ought to travel outside the United States a little bit to get some perspective. Maybe burqas aren't such a bad idea after all.

What makes the whole thing even more hypocritical is immediately below the article about Freeman's "transgressions" are links to the following articles.

First, Jennifer Lopez rips off her sexy dress and performs in a crystal-embellished bodysuit. "Let's just say her fit physique and energy had the crowd pumped."

If black people in the USA are claiming reparations for the treatment of their ancestors should it come with an agreement to be repatriated to the various African countries? Or should these 21st century people just get on with living.
