Roger Bannister
He is a local hero - born and raised literally a stone's throw from my house. He was at primary school (the same one as I attended) with my mother.
Here he is as a child in his garden with sister Joyce. Our local running track The Bannister Sports Ground was named after him and opened by him. I have competed there many times. R.I.P. Sir Roger Last edited by bloke57; March 4th, 2018 at 11:46 AM.. |

Fiorentina and Italy player Astori dies
Fiorentina captain and Italy international Davide Astori has died at the age of 31. The defender died following a "sudden illness" his club confirmed on their official Twitter feed. Fiorentina were scheduled to play Udinese on Sunday afternoon but the game has been called off. Astori, capped 14 times by Italy, joined Fiorentina in 2016 from Cagliari and had made 58 appearances for the club.

SIR ROGER BANNISTER - The first man to run a mile under 4 minutes
has died at the age of 88 One of Britain's greatest athletes thoughts to all family friends and fellow athletes of his time RIP without his remarkable feat the mile record would not be where it is today & would not have had the Ovett/Coe record battles and the best British middle distance running of our time |

When Bannister broke the 4-minute mile, the timekeeper was Harold Abrahams, the Olympic gold medalist immortalized in Chariots of Fire, and the track announcer was Norris McWhirter.

My Dad still regrets not going to Iffley Road to see Sir Roger break the four minute mile as the night before he and his friend had gone to a meeting in London but it had poured down so he decided not to go...how he wishes he had even all these years later but he did have the pleasure of meeting Sir Roger many years later and he was a true gent. He will be sorely missed by the athletics world and his legacy will live I in any athlete that aspires to be the best. As a BBC FOUR documentary that aired last year called his achievement -the Everest of the Track.
