To say nothing of the cultural cringe, "often linked with the display of anti-intellectual attitudes towards thinkers, scientists, and artists who originate from a colonial or post-colonial nation. It can also be manifested in individuals in the form of cultural alienation.."

Pretty sure wikipedia is written by ignorant web surfers. Prawns are a saltwater crustacean. there is no doubt about this.

There is probably just locality differences for the names between these edible crustaceans.

In my part of the world, shrimp are these claw-less creatures.

Prawns are their slightly larger cousins.

The only fresh water crustacean around me are crawdads - a much smaller cousin of the lobster.

I am kind of surprised to see on the net that there are varieties of freshwater shrimp - some with claws - as well as freshwater prawns - some also with claws.

So I am guessing it just changes to whatever exists near you and what you choose to call it.

'Prawn' and 'shrimp' are not scientific names therefore their meaning changes according to location and over time. The terms are now more or less interchangeable. Freshwater crayfish are generally called yabbies in Australia, derived from an Aboriginal word.

We call them rapu, or crayfish in English

Only found in rivers in August, and very expensive

In my experience names vary from state to state.
Here in the deep south if they are freshwater (rivers, etc) they are lobsters and saltwater = crayfish.
