Quiz Show
I clearly remember a quiz show called 'Jokers Wild' broadcast in the 70s. It was shown at lunch times on ITV. It featured a gallery of well-known comedians of the day including, Ted Ray, Arthur 'I Thank You' Askey, Les Dawson. It was hosted by Barry Cryer.
'Jokers Wild' was a light-hearted game-show in which two teams of comedians pitted their wits against each other, for the coveted prize of a bronze statuette of a jester. Chairman Barry Cryer would select a random topic, and challenge a comic to tell a joke based on it. If one of the opposition thought he knew the gag, he could interrupt by pressing an alarm, then he would have to complete it. There was also a solo spot where a comic was required to extract as many laughs as he could in two minutes! The long list of all-time great comedians who appeared on the show included Les Dawson, Arthur Askey and Ted Ray, along with some not-so greats such as Hope & Keen, Brian Marshall and the late Ray Martine. Good natured fun though it was, sometimes the friendly rivalry between the comics turned nasty. On one memorable occasion, Jack Douglas inferred that Les Dawson was stingy, resulting in a red-faced Les storming off the studio floor! He later returned with drinks for everyone - except Jack! |

Oswald,
The version of Joker's Wild is a far different version than the one I remember watching. It just goes to show that there is a huge difference in some shows broadcast here in the states and those in the UK. Here's a link to the wikipedia article on the US version. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Joker's_Wild Ghaleon |

My favorite game show was the Hollywood Squares which aired from 1965-1980.

I'm currently watching the U.K version of The Chase which isn't bad and hosted by Bradley Walsh. He usually tends to lose it now and again when a funny question comes up. Particularly the one about Fanny Chmelar.

I really enjoy the American version of The Chase. Mark Labett is the chaser, known as "the Beast." Although, I prefer the sobriquet "Tyrant of Trivia."
Last summer, there was a show on Fox called Boom. Contestants were given a multiple answer question and they had to clip the wires on a "bomb" to register their answers. If the wrong wire was clipped, the "bomb" would "explode," spraying the contestant with chocolate syrup or gravy or whipped cream and so on. You had more choices as the game went on, with an ultimate prize of $1,000,000. It falls under the technical definition of a game show, I really enjoy Forged in Fire on History. Four bladesmiths are brought together and given the challenge of making a weapon of their design under certain parameters. Two smiths are eliminated and the final two then make a weapon of the judges choice. But my all time favorite is Jeopardy! and has been since the NBC version from the 60's and 70's. In 1994, I fulfilled a lifetime dream and won $15,500 on the show.

I much prefer quizzes to game shows and love taking part in pub quizzes. My favourites are The Chase and University Challenge. Egg Heads is too slow paced for me so I am a fan of the Chasers rather than Egg Heads as experts.
I aren't a real fan of game shows as I'm a purist and prefer the application of knowledge rather than luck. If I had to choose one it would be 3,2,1 for the sheer daftness of the clues which were impossible to work out and could be applied to so many of the prizes.

Game shows like "The Price Is Right" and the like I can't watch, however, I would watch "Family Feud" if the families were allowed to beat the shit out of each other
