Good point, it's said that no matter how long one is abstinent, only a "harmless small drink" can start the vicious circle again (and I can fully relate to that, don't ask...)
Might go for many drugs, true, but alcohol is really a bitch, no matter how bad one feels, it induces that sweet carelessness and euphoria that makes problems and issues appear not as bad or urgent. Kinda like Lou Reed sang in "Waiting for the man": I feel good I feel fine until tomorrow but that's another time. Hangovers can be a whole "unique" experience in itself |

White mans's burden, Lloyd my man, white man's burden.....
How about London's Gin epidemic 1920-1950? Gin shops sold their product for one penny a pint - far cheaper than beer and ale. People died in vast numbers from cirrhosis of the liver. In London there were twice as many burials as baptisms, women went into prostitution to feed their habit and the rest of Europe did not want to conduct business with the capital. Parliament passed five major Acts, in 1729, 1736, 1743, 1747 and 1751, designed to control the consumption of gin, some led to major riots, and were behind the licensing laws today that all the tourists complain about. Can't stand gin myself. When it comes to spirit, I'm more of a Tequila man...... Ayayayayay........rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrheeee eha! |

Hard to believe that the sale of alcohol was once illegal in the USA !
George Best said that he gave up drink for a whole year... I wonder ... did he ? we only have his word for it! I need that alcohol buzz every day and Id miss it if it was nt there. ( Im only talking one can of 4 % beer plus maybe a small glass of cider ) I think the mistake is to have that drink, say at lunch time or in the afternoon and then to start again in the evening if there's a match on the telly .... I never do that .. I have that one drink per day and thats it .. finito ! Last edited by stardust2003; January 29th, 2012 at 02:11 PM.. |

Clearly, vodka is necessary to maintain happiness
But I do not understand why Mr Burton says 1/3 of his life was hangovers. What are we to think of this? That he wasn't a serious drinker, or that he couldn't count to 30% |

I'm an alcoholic in "recovery" my liver is f#cked. I used to drink 3 bottles of whiskey and wasn't falling down drunk. I've detoxed in hospital over 10 times, had the DTs etc etc. It takes sometimes many years to become an alkie. You kid yourself that you are OK, but you are not. First step is admiting to yourself you have a problem. Of course booze if used properly is great in no way am I anti booze. I could write a book on this subject, maybe I should
But there's BB's tuppence worth.

Unlike narcotic withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal is classed as a medical emergency. You can die. So don't ever go cold turkey! See your doc. If he/she won't help head to A&E/ER.
