Default Mexican anti-logging activist killed

A prominent Mexican environmentalist has been shot dead in his home state of Chihuahua after receiving death threats. Isidro Baldenegro had spent many years organising peaceful protests against illegal logging in the Sierra Madre mountains. In 2005 he won the prestigious Goldman environmental prize. A UK-based watchdog, Global Witness, says 33 activists were killed in Mexico in the five years up to 2015. Isidro Baldenegro was a community leader for Mexico's indigenous Tarahumara people and was one of the country's most prominent environmental activists. He had recently returned to his home village after receiving death threats against himself and his family. Mr Baldenegro was the second recipient of the Goldman Prize, given to grassroots activists, to be murdered in less than a year. Honduran campaigner Berta Caceres, who won the prize in 2015 for her battle against the construction of a dam that threatened to displace indigenous communities. was killed in March 2016.
The western Sierra Madre mountains are one of the world's most bio-diverse ecosystems and include four canyons each bigger than the Grand Canyon. They are the ancestral land of the Tarahumara people. These forests have been targeted by illegal loggers helped by corrupt officials and landowners, forcing the Tarahumara into progressively smaller and more isolated areas. As a young boy, Isidro Baldenegro witnessed the murder of his father as he took a stand against logging. In 1993 he founded a grassroots NGO to fight deforestation which attracted national attention. In 2002, he organised a series of blockades and marches which forced the government to temporarily suspend logging and a year later was imprisoned for 15 months on charges of weapon and drugs possession. Human rights activists say his detention was fabricated by a network of state officials, landowners and criminal bosses involved in logging. It triggered widespread international condemnation and he was released in 2004.

Huge shock.

Such a talented actor.

Both him and his dad were hugely talented people.

My favorit of his have to be his role in the original Robocop.

But let us not forget his roles in Crossing Jordan, NCIS LA, Iron Man 3, Desp. Housewives, Twin Peaks, The Stand.

That is a shock as I had not heard about his illness before the news of his death. These days that is a rarity when newshounds are scouring every inch of personal lives for titbits of gossip. I can remember him back in the 80's and 90's in films like Robocop and Blank Check. Then into more modern stuff like Psych and more recently NCIS. I always liked him as an actor as he just had something. He will be missed RIP.

Default Top Brazil judge dies in plane crash

A prominent Brazilian Supreme Court judge has died in a plane crash. Two other bodies were found at the crash site in the sea near Paraty, some 250km (160 miles) south of Rio de Janeiro. Teori Zavascki, 68, was overseeing a massive corruption investigation at the state oil company, Petrobras. The scandal has rocked Brazil. The political crisis it triggered led to the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff in September. Dozens of politicians have been arrested - including former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - as part of the inquiry, known as Operation Car Wash, over the past two years. Prosecutors say they were paid vast amounts in exchange for granting lucrative contracts to private companies that had overcharged Petrobras. President Michel Temer has declared three days of national mourning following Mr Zavascki's death.

It bothered me TMZ didn't mention movie roles like Robocop. I recognize him most from Twin Peaks, he appeared in a couple episodes as Al Rosenfeld, FBI forensics specialist, not really a sociable person, mainly got into spats with Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean) in the show, obviously a colleague of Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). Like all things Lynch, there was quite the odd conclusion of Rosenfeld and Truman's beef. Yeah his character was very memorable in that, I hardly remember Robocop, but I know he was in it, he gave the introductory speech of the title character. Didn't know he was related to George Clooney. Anyways, may he rest in peace.

Sad Ferrer has gone so young. Recently watched Wrong Turn at Tahoe, but I remember him most for Robocop, Deep Star Six and The Stand.

God Bless
