Steve Wright show's 'Old Woman' dies
Joyce Frost, who appeared as the "Old Woman" on BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, has died. Frost, from Dagenham, Essex, had died "peacefully and pain free" last week, Wright announced on his Wednesday show. The Old Woman, a regular character on the programme, would discuss the news and once presented a game of factoids with Hollywood actor Will Smith. Wright praised her as "a complete natural on the air" and said she had been a "lovely, lovely person". On Wednesday's show, Wright told listeners she had been "very opinionated and witty" and always cheeky, funny and charming. Wright added: "It's a sad loss, thank you for being the Old Woman with us Joyce and we'll miss you very much." BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon aired its first episode in 1999 after moving over from BBC Radio 1. The three-hour programme regularly features characters including The Old Woman and Barry from Watford, as well as popular segment Ask Elvis. Ms Frost had not done radio before the programme but Wright said she was "unbelievably professional" and never fazed by the big stars.

Jack Bodell: Former British, European & Commonwealth champion dies at 76
Former British and European heavyweight champion Jack Bodell has died, aged 76.
The Derbyshire-born fighter won amateur honours at light-heavyweight and claimed the British heavyweight title as a professional in October 1969. He lost the belt to Henry Cooper but won it back in 1971 when a victory over Joe Bugner also secured the Commonwealth and European titles. His career ended in 1972 after 58 wins and 13 losses, and in later life he suffered with dementia.

Hardly surprising but still very sad. I was 18 when I first heard his music, soft and sad but with a certain beauty. During the 1970's his original Greatest hits was one of the records found in most students record collections. Saw him in concert twice, memorable or what.

Leonard Cohen was a master of his craft, although often rather too downbeat for my tastes. Undoubtedly, my favourite LC song was "First we take Manhattan." A long time ago, I was going out with a girl who worked at one of the major London radio stations and Leonard Cohen was a guest. According to her, he was a delightful guy and there wasn't a women in the building who wasn't attracted to him. He certainly had a full and interesting life, but it still seems like a sad loss.
