What about the Wirraway?

I think it was based on a US plane but made in Australia.

It was. There's a nice restored Wirraway just North of me, or there was.

My first link talked a bit about it, & linked to here. It (the earlier link) says the Wirraway's airframe became the basis for the Boomerang.

If only it still had the stunning thylacine.

If I lived in Australia, I would hunt down and shoot anyone who colluded in driving this unique and amazing animal to extinction. Okay, so they would be well over 90 by now but I would show no mercy.

In 1888 the government placed a one pound bounty on their heads.

These days they're protecting possums, which are in like plague proportions.
I can't even grow a potato without them chewing the tops to the ground.

Who protects the farmers?

How times change eh?! I suppose these days there would be an area set aside or something. But to deliberately destroy a unique species within living memory is so sad and shocking to our modern sensibilities.

It wasn't that long ago the belief was that Tasmanian aboriginals had been wiped out. Hunted down and pushed off cliffs. I was taught 'Truganini ' was the last. Now there are descendants lining up for grants.

('scuse me, gotta go hide my onions. There may be politicians about )

Beautiful cities like Melbourne and Sydney are worth a visit alone. My father wanted to emigrate to Australia and he either knew what he was doing or he was totally crazy. It was all set in the Australian embassy but my mother didn't want to go. Had he succeeded, I'd be sitting in Melbourne now, peeling an apple with my knoife or something like that.
Which suburb would you have lived in, Brunswick or Heidelberg?
