E.J.Bellocq's Storyville photographs

From the Wikipedia entry on Bellocq:

Quote:
John Ernest Joseph Bellocq (1873 – 1949) was an American professional photographer who worked in New Orleans during the early 20th century. Bellocq is remembered for his haunting photographs of the prostitutes of Storyville, New Orleans' legalized red light district. These have inspired novels, poems and films.
What I like about the photos is that they seem pretty natural, offering us glimpses of intimacy and genuine warmth. Even the classic portraits, with deliberate, confrontational posing, often have a humanistic feel. They seem like scenes from daily life, constituting in sum a pictorial ethnography of the women of Storyville.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Default Murray Korman (1902-1961)

I became aware of photographer Murray Korman only fairly recently. Until I began finding out more about him I hadn't realised what an important photographer he was. Through trawling the net I've gathered together a small collection of 74 images his work. Here are a few examples these plus the others I have put in a RAR file the download link is below no password is required.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/rkcc8...mages.rar/file

At the hight of his fame you didn't appear in a Broadway show and not be photographed by Murray Korman.

Murray was born Moritz in 1902 in the Ukraine the youngest of five children, he moved with his brother and sisters to the US in 1912. After his schooling he got a job as a sketch artist, He was talented and popular enough that in 1927 he was able to open his own studio. One of his first big jobs was for Florenz Ziegfeld sketching the cast of the Follies.

Murray's sketches were so popular that he hired a photographer to photograph the completed sketches and to to also photograph models that he could make sketches from. However Murray was shrewed enough to realise that photography was the way to make money and after six months of learning he was sufficiently aquainted with all the techniques to open his own photographic studio.

He became an almost overnight success and all though the 30's and 40's he was increadibly busy. But then in the 50's his star began to wain he aloso began to have health and financial problems. In Murray's lifetime it is estimate that the number of women he photographed is close to 500,000.

By 1961 he'd had to close down his own studio and was hiring a studio from James Kriegsmann. On Wednesday August 9th 1961 while working at the Kriegsmann Studios Murray had a third heart attack he would not recover from.

His only surviving family were his two nieces Sally and Roberta. Kriegsmann had Murray's considerable archive of negatives delivered to them. With no room to store them they selected 600 they considered the most valuable and stored them away the rest were returned to James Kriegsmann. In 1988 Kriegsmann sold his business and what became of Murray's archive remains a mystery.

Enjoy
