That's right.

A police marksman explained on the news that you could take it out from 1,000 yards. But a firearm of that power, firing upward, means that a stray bullet would travel on for up to 5 kilometres!

Best go for a more technological answer...which seems magically to have appeared today. One wonders whether someone, somewhere had their eye well and truly off the ball.

Not impossible, but I think he meant "in theory". It would take unusual skill, but more luck, even for the most skilled marksman to hit a small, unpredictable moving target at that range. Especially if he's firing upwards and can't know the wind properties up there

As you point out, firing solid shot over populated centers is not an option

Whatever reason the shitheads flying those drones have for doing it, the fact is they have caused major inconvenience at one of the busiest times of the year and will have cost many millions to pounds to date.

I am surprised that with the amount of drones around and the terror alerts we have that no one has come up with an option to down the buggers, they are controlled remotely so there has to be a way to block the signal .... hasn't there

I'd slam the buggers behind bars for a minimum of 10 years with no access to anything electronic at all, if they owned any property I would confiscate that and sell it off. They know what they are doing and deserve no sympathy at all.

The sentence has to be harsh to discourage other fuckwits, and screw their civil liberties.

There is, obviously. Use Chinese technology

The strange thing is, Britain thought "security" was one of its strong cards when negotiating with EU. Now we know why EU knew it wasn't, and why it meant little in negotiations

I hardly think this would even have merited even a footnote in security discussions to date to be honest but I am very surprised that no one has already set up measures to down drones over populated areas. The technology is out there but it's just not the glamorous end of the security spectrum.
Hopefully these incidents will bring the dangers posed by drones more into the public view.

Maybe it's time to consider making them illegal unless licensed.

Default Gatwick Airport reopens after latest suspension

A further drone sighting has again disrupted the UK's second biggest airport, with flights grounded and passengers unable to fly.

Aircraft were left circling above the area during the latest alert, which came at about 17:10 GMT. Flights resumed less than 90 minutes later.

A spokeswoman for the airport said the suspension was only as a precaution.

She said military measures had been put in place that meant it was safe to reopen.

Doctor lay dead in Birmingham hospital storeroom for two days
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...ngham-46650700

Serious questions need answering as to how this could have happened, the NHS has some serious issues that need addressing and the way it is managed is right at the top of the list
