Watching the debate in the House of Commons-- I'm now seeing a figure I wasn't familiar with the "Speaker of the House of Commons" who's severely critical of Theresa May, John Bercow.

Every time I see him, he seems like a smart straight shooter, appears respected by all sides.

Is there a reason he couldn't be a candidate for PM? Just judging on the few times I've seen him, he seems to be an appealing guy.

Or is Speaker of Parliament end of the road for a political career?

He's a Conservative but a lot of other Conservatives hate Him,So He's never likely to be elected Leader.

Bercow is regarded as being slightly-less-than-loyal by many in the Tory party- He's undergone a bit of a political journey over the years, IIRC he was very right-wing early in his political career, but moved far enough left that it was rumoured some years ago that he was about to defect to Labour.

It's not helped by the fact that his wife Sally is not only a rampant self-publicist- she once gave an interview for a newspaper which was illustrated with a pic of her wearing little more than a bedsheet...

and appeared in Celebrity Big Brother- but is also openly a Labour supporter who has both campaigned for the party and stood (unsuccessfully) for election as a Labour councillor in the past.
