There are quite a few "pre-code" movies, meaning before the Hays Commission (Censorship Board) was established in Hollywood. It set up a "code" of what you could and could not show in a movie.

Some examples of "more flesh than you'd expect" would be:

In the bath scene in "The Sign of the Cross", Claudette Colberts' nips appear at times above the water line of her milk bath.

There's also a scene in the movie "Wings" of Clara Bow getting undressed when the two fliers walk in on her.

And of course Maureen's exposed legs up to her hips. There's also a skinny dipping scene that is pretty flagrant, although it was a body double for Maureen. Not because Maureen had any problem with it, but the film makers felt using a professional swimmer would choreograph better. That's the double in the 3rd picture. Shame, here I thought I'd found some nice photos of Maureen's bare ass, but it actually belongs to a body double. Course the double has a nice butt.

There are numerous others, and at least one book that I know of that dealt with pre-code Hollywood.

The bottom photo basically shows what you could not do- but it had other restrictions, too. After that time you would not see for example a female navel (you can see Maureen's in some of the publicity shots others have posted above), and nudity was totally out. Believe it or not, some pre-code movies did have some mild nudity.

It is from Tarzan and his Mate. I just attended a presentation of Tarzan movies just last night. After that movie, Maureen had to wear her "Wilma Flintstone" type dress that covered up her upper thighs and midriff.

Alas and alack, that swimming scene is not Maureen, but I wish to hell it was!
