To reply to Brecht's post about all our excessive military spending, yes, most of what you say is true.

It actually props up sectors of our economy and keeps the technological/industrial base up to speed. Many thousands of academics, engineers and plant workers depend on it, in addition to the actual soldiers.

It would be nice to transform our economy and shift that spending on to something else, but I don't see how. And the current system is very well entrenched.

It's too bad there isn't another succulent planet in our solar system, we could spend 700 million a year colonizing it, instead of on blowing up raggedy guys in robes and turbans as the national pastime.

I remember this case at the time, all the shitheads involved should be locked up forever, they are of no use to man nor beast.
An innocent man was killed and that is solely due to their immature frigging about, if I was a member of the victim's family and I received a letter of apology from any of those involved I'd tell him and his legal team exactly where they could stick it.

Our City's elected officials are so out of touch with reality, and yet so desperate to appear relevant, that they actually though the majority of their constituents would support spending $5 Billion on the Olympics; at a time when our local economy is in the tank. We constantly hear them moaning about how (since the oil price collapse in 2014) the high vacancy rates in downtown office towers have drained $200 Million per year from the civic tax-base. The silly bastards have thus far refused to curtail wages or cut services to offset the shortfall in tax revenues, and are currently musing about increasing our residential property taxes instead.
