Certainly not my dear Mal Hombre. I'm more trying to point out that the whole thing started almost as a family feud, a battle of egos and that as the oft used expression 'repeating the same thing and expecting a different result' could be applied to the tactics used.

And that the generals using those tactics were indifferent to the casualties. Just numbers to them. Numbers to further their own glory.

At the beginning of the war, the era of the bayonet charge was over - replaced by the industrialised slaughter of rapid firing machine gun and artillery shell.
Few commanders realised this in 1914 . . .

and some had still not learned the lesson by 1918.

The American Civil War marked the end of massed infantry attacks on prepared positions as a viable option but as You say the Generals of the Great War refused to accept it.

Many say yes

If Britain had not gone to war, it would have stayed European, been much shorter, and saved millions of casualties, including your own. That's their reasoning

No Soviet Union either.

So that would have saved a fair few more million lives.

Russia was in the war before Britain though.

Or do you mean there wouldn't have been a revolution?

For alternative media options:

Check out the Great War channel on YouTube. A team has been documenting the war week-by-week for four years now, and the last episode just aired at 11 am today (Armistice Day). It's just amazing content with a great host.

Also, Dan Carlin on Hardcore History podcast did a great six-episode series that is still free to listen to.

There were many, many chances for there to be no Soviet Union even after Nicholas II abdicated.

As to whether the Russian Empire would have fallen, that almost certainly going to happen at some point in the early 20th century anyway.

Somehow blaming the Soviet Union on Britain's entry into the Great War is pretty ridiculous.
