I remember looking at a relationship book by a psychologist until she had been married multiple times (3? 5? don't remember.) Didn't bother reading further because I already had plenty of experience in failed relationships and wasn't interested in what another clueless woman had to say. It was some time later that I realized that my 'picker' honed in on women with faulty relationship skills. I was trying to get what Mom could never give me (or Dad) from women just like her.

Now I get annoyed when one of those lonely older women tries to rope me in. I am too old to put up with that BS anymore.

Anyone who writes a book about "relationships" should then pen a follow up advice book called "How to Nail Jelly (Jello) to the Ceiling" for all the good it will do.

People are varied and disparate in their characters and those variations also change over time. Add to that changes in health, wealth, family pressures and employment....to claim to have come up with a set of rules governing such an unstable and ephemeral state of being is pure charlatanism.

Of course there are many couples who, with goodwill, intelligence and tolerance, make a very good go of it. But those people will not be buying those books - so what is the point in them?

I think you'd know that once such a tome rears its ugly head, it is time to walk away.
