Those of us here in the 1980's who loved the children's ghost comedy show RENTAGHOST will remember Ann Emery, who sadly died aged 86 this week. She was the wife of Harold Meaker(Edward Brayshaw) who ran an agency called Rentaghost and he and her, Ethel Meaker were always getting in the way of the resident ghosts and usually coming off the worst. Michael Staniforth played a medieval jester called Mr Claypole and he would always call her 'Mistress Meaker' but sometimes play practical jokes on her and Harold. Sadly they didn't make it into the second series and were replaced by two nosey neighbours. I am not sure if did anything else but I do recall her once singing an old song called 'Tangerine' (possibly for a sequence in Rentaghost) but I am pretty sure I saw her turn up in an advert for Maryland Cookies. More information here. Oh yes and she was the half sister of British comedian, Dick Emery.

David Herd, who died on Sunday, had a goalscoring record that might surprise a few people: 145 goals in 265 games for Manchester United and 99 in 166 for Arsenal, along with a few more at Stockport and Stoke. Astonishingly, he won only five caps for Scotland, which says something about the quality of Scottish players in the 1960s. Just imagine how many caps he would have won in a different era.
He seems to have been something of an unlucky player, having missed out on the 1968 European Cup Final when the teenaged Brian Kidd got the nod when Denis Law had to miss out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37533154
