It's a strange point when I have to say RIP to an actor that died over a year ago. I've been reading up about some of my favorite TV shows as I sometimes like to do and I found out that Tony Longo died on 21st June 2015. I loved his part as Mad Dog Smears in 1st and Ten. It's one of the sad things about celluloid that we sometimes think those that appear on it will stay young forever.
You've not seen comedy till you see the scene from Stir Crazy where Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are first put in prison.

There was one scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that I think was designed to scare kids. Roald Dahl was never one to hold back at adults losing their temper and I think there must have been loads of kids taken aback when confronted by Willy Wonka, Charlie and his Grandpa Joe are accused of stealing fizzy lifting drinks. Wilder launches into this slightly incoherent tirade including showing them a contract and quoting 'E Plurabus Unum'(usually on banknotes) and Grandpa Joe calls him a fraud, a charlatan, who shatters young people's dreams. Of course this subsides when Charlie gives back a sweet he was given(the kids had been tested by Wonka) and then Wilder becomes all sweetness and light again. A brilliant performance all the same.
Second one from 'The Producers' Zero Mostel tries to calm an already manic Wilder by throwing a glass of water over him, which only makes him shout out 'I'm wet!' and rants on, so Mostel slaps him one across the face. There is a pause and he then says "I'm in pain" - amazing comic timing. Finally story goes that Wilder suggested to Mel Brooks that he and Frankenstein dance to Putting on the Ritz in 'Young Frankenstein.' Genius.

I was very sad to learn of Gene Wilder's passing. I knew for some time that he was ill, but it always hurts to lose one of your favorites. I have spent the last couple of days watching all of the DVDs I have of his movies.
One of my favorite movies from Gene Wilder that is frequently overlooked was The Frisco Kid: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079180/ A very underrated movie which got me laid many times. Always a plus in my book. I also always enjoyed The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072608/ Not a great movie but good and worth watching. I love to watch Gene, Marty and Madeline working together. Sadly they are all gone. However, nothing will ever compare to Young Frankenstein. For me, it is one of the greatest movies ever made. I have lost track of the number of times I have watched all or part of this movie. Whenever I am flipping through channels and I come across Young Frankenstein, I have to stop and watch (despite owning this movie in both video tape and DVD). After all of the years, it still makes me giggle. This has been a sad year for the entertainment industry with the loss of so many great talents. I have to admit to having dreams of Gene Wilder and Alan Rickman working together |
