Default Another sad loss

Sam J. Porcello has died at the age of 76. He passed away in his home in New Jersey. Who was he? He's the man who invented the cream center for Oreo cookies, which earned him the nickname "Mr. Oreo". This guy touched the lives of millions of people all over the world. I will be toasting his memory with a plateful of Double Stuff Oreos and an ice cold glass of milk. Here's to you Sam, RIP.

Default Doc Watson, bluegrass legend 1923-2012

Winston-Salem, NC-- Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson died on Tuesday, May 29 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Watson who was 89, had colon surgery at the hospital last week. The legendary bluegrass singer and guitar player was the recipient of the National Medal of Arts, a National Heritage Fellowship, and eight Grammy Awards.

The hospital confirmed his death to WFMY News 2 Tuesday night.

NC Gov. Bev Perdue today issued the following statement:
"Over his long and brilliant career, Doc Watson traveled the world playing the music he loved, but his heart never strayed far from his home in Deep Gap, North Carolina. His peerless abilities garnered him countless awards, including North Carolina's highest civilian honor, the North Carolina Award, in 1986, and the North Carolina Heritage Award in 1994. Our state was fortunate to have such a worldwide ambassador of North Carolina's culture and heritage. He will be missed."

Default Jim Unger, "Herman" cartoonist, 1937-2012

"Wake up, the cat's got your teeth."

www.timescolonist.com/news/Cartoonist+Unger+creator+Herman+dies+Saanich/6698474/story.html

Jim Unger, the man behind the cartoon Herman, is being remembered as an artist, trailblazer and offbeat comic.

Unger, 75, had been feeling unwell for some time and died in his sleep at his Saanich home, his friend Adrian Raeside said Tuesday.

“Although we no longer have Jim Unger with us, we are lucky to have his body of work that spans decades, his cartoons still as fresh and as funny as they were the day he drew them,” Raeside said.

Raeside, who draws cartoons for the Times Colonist as well as a syndicated comic strip, said that Unger was probably the funniest man he had ever known. Unger, he said, could find humour in just about anything.

Sad News

Bass player on the self titled debut album Hawkwind

Probably the best known track from the album is Hurry On Sundown

It has a blues feel about it. Indeed a lot of bands that formed in the late 60's, later to be described as Hard Rock bands in the early 70's were initially heavily influenced by blues. Black Sabbath, intially as Earth, another example.

Five time world champion boxer Johnny Tapia was found dead in his home in New Mexico. His life was a turbulent outside the ring as it was inside. His death appears to be suicide.
