Barney McKenna, the banjo player in The Dubliners, has died at the age of 72. I loved The Dubliners, who kept the flame of traditional music alive and showed that it didn't have to be po-faced, but could be fun, bawdy, political, drunken, serious and any other thing you can think of. Sadly, we have lost Barney and Ronnie Drew in the past year or so.
Barney was a wonderful player - he played mandolin as well - and a brilliant raconteur as well. The Pogues always acknowledged their debt to The Dubliners and I shall have a big glass of stout and play The Irish Rover very loud as a tribute.

It has been announced that guitarist Ronnie Montrose's March 3 death was, in fact, a suicide. This is so very, very sad.

Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini, aged 25, has died after suffering cardiac arrest during his team's Serie B match at Pescara on Saturday. Morosini's death was confirmed by Dr Edoardo De Blasio, a cardiologist at Pescara's Santo Spirito hospital, who said: "unfortunately he was already dead when he arrived at hospital. He didn't regain consciousness."
All Italian football league matches this weekend have now been suspended as a mark of respect. |

In light of another young footballer suffering in this way, one happy note: Fabrice Muamba was released from hospital today. It is unconceivable that he will play again, but a few weeks ago, it seemed unconceivable that he would even be alive today.
