Would you believe it not 9 days after my post my MAXTOR(Seagate) 500GB HDD is starting to play me up BUT I plugged it into the front of my machine and at the moment it is behaving, however I have investigated replacement cables from Ebay for a few quid so that will be my next move should things get worse-fingers crossed it doesn't.
Good advice btw PharaohEgypt

I recently had an HP laptop and a WD 1 TB external drive crap out, both on the same day. I always kept two copies of any backups, one on-board (in a different partition) and one external... guess where the two backups were!

After having read several of the many different possible things to do when
a hard drive is on it's way to St. Peter's gate.......it left me still wondering what to do when all hope, along with the drives contents are lost. gmcbee pondered the use of a 9mm, a tire iron or perhaps a propane torch, while pharoahegypt suggested what we most likely did before considering the others......to cry like a baby lol. Personally......I find myself having a hard time just tossing my worn out drives in the trash bin, some how hoping in the back of my mind maybe, that some day in the distant future, I might plug it back in, and like magic it'll begin working again. Unfortunately....... the same as our pet dog that got ran over by the milkman when we were a kid, that just ain't gonna happen. So.....having finally convinced myself of the facts of the matter.....tomorrow's the day I take 2 of my dead and gone external hard drives to the burn barrel. There won't be any mournful ceremonies for these things, as I've cussed and cried over their dying long ago. There also won't be any politically correct recycling going on either, as I will douse both of these S.O.B.'s with diesel fuel, and burn them with almost as much glee, as the first time I plugged them in. Burning up in those flames, besides the hard drives themselves, will be the useless hopes of ever getting what was on them, safe and sound onto another hard drive. Ahhhhhhhh...... I do believe I'm starting to feel better already! |

Bigbobnobody, rather than burning them take them to an electronics recycler. Circuit boards, including those in hard drives, contain heavy metals that most first world countries classify as toxic waste. So spreading them around the neighborhood via smoke probably isn't the greatest idea.

Gold is a conductor that is often used in electronics. Its also a heavy metal and is valuable enough that if you find the right place they will pay you for it.

ex-wife's finger! lol Trust me......wasn't enough gold in those two hard drives, for a dentist to put a filling in a flea's tooth! But......I promise ya......next hard drive of mine that goes out, I'll letcha know and I'll give you a nice discount on it. Till then, I got a few aerosol cans I need to spray, because I could use a little global warming over in my chilly neck of the woods. |

If you do your due diligence about old computers and whose buyng the precious metals you'll find all too often they pay nothing or may charge to pick them up from your doorstep.
On one forum a guy asked the question about 8 computers he had just picked up Dissect and extract the precious metals? Everyone said spare parts even an ex-worker who worked for a firm who broke up old PC boards said we pay nothing because business is the real driver of this industry. We take their dead or redundant PCs and save them money. Apparently this whole industry kicked off big time around the 2008 financial recession Unless you know someone or some business who pays the metals angle is a time waster Spare parts on the otherhand has ahuge market given many dont wish to upgrade their old clunker of a PC...some parts might be as rare as gold if sold on ebay etc |
