how to allow downlowds to VEFers only?

A couple files I uploaded recently to rapidshare jumped overnight from a couple hundred to 20 thousand downloads. Obviously someone posted my links elsewhere on the internet. So I moved them to my trash bin.
I think I need to keep a lid on them, with the rapidshare's recent (constant) rule changes.

When I repost the new links, is there a way i can restrict downloads to just VEF users?

If you password-protected the files, it might discourage people from posting the links to them. The problem would then be to stop people posting the password with the links. You could post the password in, say, the Interests field of your user profile, and direct people there in your signature, and then the password would only be visible to members. But if you think that it was a member who posted the links you're referring to, that wouldn't be that much help.

impossible. even if you would share only via PM - you give something (a link) which is quite easy to c&p to a different forum - in the end you can't trust any anonymous creature in the web.

if you like you can make a bit fun of those copycats. include a textfile which makes advertisement for our forum and offers some sarcastic rants about those who've placed your files elsewhere without asking.

They must have been posted somewhere incredibly popular to achieve 20K downloads overnight. In all the past years prior to my 'retirement' that I wanted to max my downloads, I never got a sniff of numbers like that - even with links on 7-8 different boards..... And in any event, those who want to achieve downloads for themselves would have repacked and re-upped your upload.

I know of one uploader who added his forums full address to his caps and next post the offending links and caps were removed within 24 hours forum rival forum but its easy to see there will be those forums that dont care and dont take action.

Thats before you think about the mind boggling numbers of Bl#gs that are out there

I know of one on a sister forum where this occurs but thats because the material was banned.

The alternative to that would be for people using Rapidshare premium to start adding each other as friends/contacts as this has no bandwidth restrictions.

Dont ask me the ramifications of doing this to your account but it seems a logical step for those that know each other on VEF and upload/collect the same material - if only to remove their downloads from the available bandwidth allowed daily so the rest may get a bit of access.

As we've seen above you can guarantee once some smart ass starts spreading your links around like confetti your daily bandwidth allowance of 30GB of traffic for premium members will be gone in the blink of an eye sadly.

God help us free user idiots who use them for uploading

I have no answers except to think maybe if more people,who now have the material previously uploaded but now deleted were to take up the slack in a small way the current war of attrition thats being played out wouldnt make the MAIN UPLOADERS throw it in as opposed to simply taking a back seat while receiving credit.

did i say impossible? that's not 100% exact.

there is a way. but it needs a bit more than having a standard host for sharing files. for your upload location (which gives you the "download link" when the upload is finished) you need to be able to define one or more referring websites which are allowed to connect to the file. if that's possible you can make sure that your link is only availabe from such defined websites.

afaik none of the actual filesharing hosts offer such a funcionality - so, if you really want to have that, build a small piece of software (can be done in PHP) and host the files on your own.

still, you weren't sure that it's exactly your post which creates clicks on your file(s). and still, once the file was loaded, it could be taken to a different host, to place it on a different website.

Thanks for your ideas, guys. I re-uploded the files zipped with the password vintageerotica.

I'm not so sure about how rapidshare counts downloads, it can't be accurate. It was really weird, this was for "Erotica" and "Heavenly Bodies" posted on the Films of Russ Meyer thread in the softcore movies board. After the first week, the post count was in the 200's, then I checked it and one was in the 20K's, and the other was in the 11K's, and in the few seconds it took to refresh the page, the count was increasing by 20 or so. It didn't make sense to me.

With my new links, zipped into 12 parts, there's been 1 or 2 downloads, but one of the parts says over 8 thousand downloads! WTF?
