True Believer (1989)

Trailer

Eddie Dodd (James Woods), an attorney and former civil rights activist, makes his money defending drug dealers now. His new clerk, Roger Baron (Robert Downey Jr.), who is fresh out of law school, persuades Dodd to take on the case of Shu Kai Kim (Yuji Okumoto), a Korean man who was sentenced to life for allegedly killing a Chinese gang member nine years ago. Here is one of my movies I saw today. Armageddon starring Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, many others. Kind of ridiculous but fun , lots of action and special visual effects. Probably been reviewed before on this thread.

Went to the theater and saw Rogue One. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3748528/

The latest Star Wars film, a stand alone between 3 and 4. Great action, superb CGI - Peter Cushing and young Carrie Fisher were impressive.

My suggestion, enjoy the film and don't think too hard about what is going on. A number of characters from 4 show up in this film in basically cameos.

The Star Wars books - I thought - said that a lot of Bothan spies died stealing the plans for the Death Star - but I guess it was rewritten or my memory is fuzzy. No Bothans die or even are identified in this movie.

Kinda wish that K-2SO would have said "I am a leaf on the wind" but that would be sacrilege I guess.

Needless to say I liked the film and will be buying the Blu-Ray.

FENCES

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by August Wilson FENCES is the character study of a flawed but charismatic man named
Troy Maxson.
This character study is for the most part extremely dramatic with humor around it's edges
As the film plays out it is displayed how sometimes when someone selfishly pursues their own happiness, they forget about the people
beside them that are longing for happiness too.
A person can bring all the bitterness of a life denied and unfufilled into a relationship and also while being a parent.
Sometimes love and care are not displayed through hugs, kisses or even encouragement but through guidance.
Troy may be denied by the times he lives in but he's also an enemy to himself.
His wife Rose is always the loving buffer between him and his son's Cory and Lyon's
There are great performances from the entire cast which include : Denzel Washington as Troy Maxson,Viola Davis as Rose Maxson
Stephen McKinley Henderson as Jim Bono ,Jovan Adepo as Cory Maxson, Russell Hornsby as Lyons Maxson, Mykelti Williamson as Gabriel Maxson and Saniyya Sidney as Raynell Maxson.
The film's only flaw in my opinion is that it cant shake that stage play stiffness and this is often the case when bringing a stage play to the big screen
but in the end it's the performances laced which so much raw emotion that propel it past this flaw, performances which will surely gain plenty of award nominations.

ROGUE ONE : A STAR WARS STORY

Can a Star Wars film without all f the main characters we have come to know for almost 40 years have the same appeal?...in a word
YES
This is actually one of the best Star Wars films ever to be produced.
The best character development and performances comes in the form of Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, a rogue maverick detained by the Empire.
Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, a Rebel Alliance Intelligence officer.
Some characters are underdeveloped but still left an impression ,(Donnie Yen as Chirrut Îmwe, a blind warrior who believes in the Force. Alan Tudyk as K-2SO, (providing the most humor) a Rebel-owned Imperial enforcer droid whose memory is wiped by Andor
Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook, a former Imperial pilot who defects to the Rebels. and Jiang Wen as Baze Malbus, a Rebel warrior, mercenary and partner of Chirrut Îmw )so much so i wanted the team to gel and complete their mission.

This film actually gives The Rebellion more depth .It wasnt always squeaky clean, hey let's stop the oppresive Empire
Ben Mendelsohn hits all the right sinister notes as Orson Krennic, the Director of Advanced Weapons Research for the Imperial Military
There are so many new creatures and droids, and the action sequences are flawless and beyond thrilling.
The film definitely reminded me why Darth Vader is one of the best villains ever !!

The pacing is a bit off at times and the motion capture CGI was very distracting it actually looked like one of those animated characters from
Star Wars Rebels
In the end this is a rousing and moving adventure I would place Rogue One between The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens.
I actually wanted to go home and watch A New Hope afterwards ....what? it's airing on TNT all week....YESSSSSS !!!!!!

This is another of my films that I saw yesterday. Cool Hand Luke, starring Paul Newman and a whole bunch of other great actors, many of which had just started their movie and/or t.v. careers. Luke stars as a decorated World War 2 soldier in the early 1950's who ends up in a Florida road gang prison camp after a drunken spree and cutting the tops off parking meters. Luke seems to resist everything that the other prisoners take from the bosses, and eventually he escapes from the prison only to be re-captured several times. I think this is one of Newman's best films. What is more interesting to me is that so many of the actors cast in the film were relative newcomers to film and t.v., but later on went on to star in their own t.v. shows or make great movies. Some examples: Ralph Waite a minor film actor went on in just 7 more years to be one of the stars of the long running ( 9 years ) t.v. show: The Waltons, J.D. Cannon, also a minor actor in 1967 went on in just a few more years to co-star with actor Dennis Weaver in the 7 year long show: McCloud. Dennis Hopper though not a minor actor went on to becaome a great movie actor and star in films like Easy Rider, Speed, Super Mario Bros, Waterworld, and dozens of other films, and Lou Antonio a minor actor at that time went on to become an acclaimed director of t.v. shows and movies. And of course who can forget the actor Strother Martin who has one of the most famous movie lines in movie history: "What we have here is failure to communicate."

Sweet Sixteen (2002)

Trailer

Liam (Martin Compston) is a Scottish teenager who'll turn 16 soon. Together with his best friend Pinball (William Ruane) he's selling untaxed cigarettes for a living and hasn't attended school in months. Determined to buy a home before his mother gets out of prison, Liam goes through a painful experience.

Another excellent social drama by Ken Loach. A film about real people and real issues.

A Prayer for the Dying (1987)

Trailer

After a tragic mistake in which a small group of IRA soldiers bomb a school bus filled with children instead their actual targets, two British Army Land Rovers, one member of the team, Martin Fallon (Mickey Rourke), decides to leave the past behind and move on with a new life. He escapes to London where, in need of money and a passport, Fallon accepts one last job on behalf of local gangster Jack Meehan (Alan Bates). The job is to kill a rival gangster which Fallon does but is seen by the priest Michael Da Costa (Bob Hoskins). However, Fallon does not kill the witness. This gets him into a confrontational situation with Meehan.

Though the acting was just fine, the realization of the story lacks a certain coherence. Dissatisfied with the results, both Mickey Rourke and director Mike Hodges disowned the film.

League Of Gods.
One of those wonderful Chinese fantasy films, set in a pseudo-medieval China with amazingly characters who can defy gravity, run up walls, jump thirty metres straight up, walk on water and catch an arrow with their teeth.
And of course a villain who is the last word in cool evil.
Great stuff.
