Remember when your Mum said "Wait till your Dad gets home"

and you went to your room and waited

Well I read that way more than 3 or 6 times

Story of 2 kids that find this metallic device , hence Gismo and it allowed them to talk to aliens when they hooked it up to a ham radio set

Great short novel if you were in my predicament

I have a few I keep returning to, but this is an all time favourite that I read every year.

It's hard to summarise, but a surrealist romp taking in Stalin's Moscow and Pilate's Jerusalem, with all kinds of weird subplots... yes, it's a book like no other. And of course Mick Jagger, one of the first people to discover it in translation, took it as a base for "Sympathy for the Devil".

I've read this four times now and I still find it to be a really good read.

Maybe it's a 'comfort' thing but aroung the Christmas period, I find that I want to read something easy. This year I'm revisiting the WWI stories of Biggles by Capt W.E. Johns, which have been collected numerous times and over the years I've read them all more often than I care to remember. It helps that the author was a pilot in those early days, so these undemanding tales have at least a degree of authenticity about them, even if the tales are pure Boy's Own.

The Berkut by Joseph Heywood. Stalin sends a team of dedicated agents to capture Hitler after his escape from Berlin.

Fast Copy by Dan Jenkins. In 1936, young heiress returns to her hometown in Texas to run the local paper, owned by her father. She encounters old friends, old attitudes, football craziness and a murder-for-pay scheme.

You Gotta Play Hurt by Dan Jenkins. A year in the life of sportswriter Jim Tom Pinch and his friends as they work their way across the major sports events around the world, and his adventures in the world of corporate finance.

I, Claudius and Claudius the God by Robert Graves. The TV series is epic, the books are so much better.

Going Long by Jeff Miller. Cover blurb: The wild 10-year saga of the renegade American Football League in the words of those who lived it.

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov. The last time I read it, I was amazed at how futuristic some of it still is, and how incredibly anachronistic it is at the same time.

I actually first met Ray when I was at San Diego State University and he was at UCSD – both of us were D&D players; he was part of a great group of guys there at UCSD, some of them came up with the idea for Midkemia. After a year or so, I lost track of him until 1982. I have always liked comic books and had been getting mine at Pacific Comics in Pacific Beach, at least until after they concentrated on publishing them instead. Then I went to Alf's Comic Kingdom, in North Park, and found out that Ray was one of the managers there – and in 1982 his novel came out and copies were available from him at Alf's. Average cost of a hardback fiction book then was around $14 – his cost $20 because of it's size – that's why the paperback edition was cut into 2 books (like Tolkien's LotR was cut into 3...) I bought a copy after reading the first few pages in the store.
I could see how he used the gaming Midkemia background in his book, but without the sophomoric treatment that others had done. I really liked his characters and plotting, along with finding out a lot more about the Midkemia setting. He has a style that reads fast for someone like me, always a plus.
Same here.
Before I got my EReader and built up a huge library of stolen books I had to reread books to pass the time.
This was defininately one of my favourite series.

Indeed! Dean & Son titles were sold at our local newagents. I think the first one I bought was this collection of short stories, which narrowly edged out their edition of 'Heidi', as it featured some WWI flying stories

A moving gothic horror tragic comedy murder mystery psychological suspense ghostly Sci Fi western set in modern day Hindustan during the 1920`s. This rustily written in the fourth person coming of age drama involves Peter and Paula . Who was originally Paul. Until decided she didn't feel comfortable being a boy anymore. She/He is however perfectly happy to go a`harpooning. Although Peter finds the change in his former boyfriend still unsettling come the evening whenever they`re a`spooning.

E F Benson¨s Mapp and Lucia series ( 6 in total ) from Queen Lucia to Lucia´s Progress.
I have read them at least 7 times just an absolute joy to read about the machinations & backstabbing of the Monied class in a village called Tilling in the 20s &30s. Funny, charming, witty novels. Delightful reading
