I need a movie that scares me.
Nothing scares me in film anymore. Nothing. All of the traditional horror films and the supposed "scariest movie of all time" The Exorcist just doesn't do it for me anymore. And that was 17 years ago.
Last movie which scared me is 1991's Cape Fear with De Niro and Nolte. People chased by maniacs with chainsaws, swords, knives, laser weapons, plasma weapons, jumping out of trees, hiding under bushes, hiding under cars, wearing masks/costumes, and corrupt members of law enforcement is blasse for me. I want to be so scared, a frightened curled up little boy under the blanket and I want it right now. cough. So if you please, help me. |

I have never been scared by a movie. I know it is fiction. But i'm up for the challenge.

I'm the same, I will admit I've been made to jump but that's as close as I have got.

A subject close to my heart, one I've thought about a lot, because I really love a good horror film. I think horror has to work on a few levels. The villain or monster has to be truly terrifying, either physically or psychologically or both. Whatever he/she/it does to people must be awful to the extent that any sane person would do anything to avoid it.
Just running away can't be a possibility. I have no sympathy for characters who don't simply run when they have the chance. Thus I like villains/monsters you can't get away from. I think The Ring and Nightmare on Elm Street are good examples. And Alien, since the characters are trapped with the thing and must deal with it. Also important, for me at least, is for the protagonists to be smart. They have to make every correct move in trying to beat the villain/monster, so when they continue to fail, it becomes more and more frightening. A good example of this is again Alien, which has a cast of scientists that make the most logical moves every time but still get slaughtered. And lastly, the characters have to work on a human level. Identifying with them just because they're in danger isn't enough. We have to care a bit, so that we're afraid for them. I think casting unknowns is extremely helpful in this regard. We don't know whether these characters will survive. When you see Jessica Biel in Texas Chainsaw Massacre you can't really feel any suspense, because we know she wouldn't be in the movie if she was going to get killed. So what I've seen recently that you could maybe try are Coffin Rock, which is a suspense movie in the Hitchcockian vein, and Insidious, a classic style ghost story. Also kind of good was the quasi-zombie flick Quarantine, which is remake of [rec]. Even if those three don't scare you, they're entertaining to watch. |

Long time since i laughed so much.
I thought the original of hostel was an interesting premise.
Same with Wolf Creek which was supposedly based on the story of Bradley John Murdoch, although i don't really think either is 'edge of your seat' "scary", but i may be too cynical for that. One i certainly wouldn't recommend to anybody is "Paranormal Entity" which i watched two nights ago and is probably the absolute worst film i have ever seen. Shot badly in "Blair Witch" handheld style the 'based on a true story' tag is quickly followed by a 'purely fiction' - any character resembling ... disclaimer. At the beginning of the movie when Thomas (a main character) called 911 he claimed that "it" killed his mother and sister while at the end of the movie it is said that she kills herself, after hearing of her son's (Thomas) suicide. Nice floors though! The thought of a sequel to the last scares me. and it's already out! Last edited by blondifan; August 28th, 2011 at 10:33 AM.. Haven't seen them myself yet, but from what I heard these seem to be pretty scary:

This was mentioned already, but the claustrophobic dark corridors of Nostromo in Alien get me every time. The later Aliens-movies do not have the same horror that runs down your spine at every small sound from the dark.
I suppose that as a horror movie fan you might have seen it already, but I'd bet a revisit would still give you the vibe you need...
