I have had a several discussions with some people who really are experts in this area, and that is what they always say - it is all about the quality of the camera. And if cameras were all equal, you wouldn't get such wide range in prices for them. When I switched from a SD digital camcorder (in the USD $1000 range) to a broadcast level camera the difference in quality was staggering. The camera I use now when new retailed for USD $7000 and the lense USD $3000. A HD camera and that blackmagic board above will allow you to capture off the film frame at 1080 or 720p. The fact there is more detail being captured should mean a better transfer. But like SD cameras, HD cameras will have low-end and and high-end models. Right now I have a very high-end SD camera so jumping to a low-end HD camera might not be the right move for me. Quote:

But while on this subject, hi-def should also help to get better film 'stills' off the film frames. While I can't do film transfers in hi-def yet, I can get a HD camera and capture focused still images right off the emulsion side of the film frame. I think I just gave myself a new year project - I am going to hire a high-end HD camera and capture stills with it, and then capture the same still images with my current SD camera we can make some comparisons.
