Since this is VEF:
Fanny: For a Yank, the back part. For a Brit or Aussie the front. Cunt: Yes, it means that but also an idiot or unpleasant person. Bugger: Technically sodomy. But also a rascal, good natured bloke, exclamation of displeasure or to mess up. Tart: A sweet dessert but also a prostitute or simply a slut. Pissed: For a Yank extremely angry. For a Brit drunk. Knickers=panties, but I hoped you'd figured that one out by now. Last edited by HugoHackenbush; December 9th, 2010 at 08:51 PM.. |

Revealed on Q.I. (BBC tv programme with Stephen Fry) this phrase originates apparently from Meccano-box deluxe - whether you believe that or not it is an odd phrase. We also get bog standard from that too-box standard-another Meccano system.

I would also cite the word FAG. In the USA it means someone who is gay/effiminate etc where as here it is a slang term for a cigarette but also a verb-to fag for someone means to carry out errands-this is attributed to colleges like Eton and Harrow where a lower pupil would become an older pupil's fag or errand boy. The cigarette term derives from a song "Pack up your troubles(in your old kit bag)" with the line "while you've a Lucifer(match) to light your fag..."

I heard that the Brits had a bit of a laugh when the American movie, "Free Willy" was shown in the U.K.
