Is that another manifestation of the Chrome popup-blocker thing?

I use the Chrome browser on a Win 7 laptop.

VEF is the only site I visit that triggers the Chrome pop-up blocker. I can navigate lots of other forums, bl0gs, and porn sites without seeing it.

I have a similar thing with it not allowing me to set Chrome to allow flash games to run automatically on Facebook; as no matter how many times I reset it thru Chrome settings and in browser to the far left of web addy, it still wont run without me having to allow it each time. Odd that this same fault here was solved first time around with same method.

A quick google search with a few relevant search terms - chrome images links blank tabs -
shows this issue with chrome has been around for years - if we are talking about just blank tabs showing up when left clicking images or links in chrome that doesnt involve the internal ad-blocker chrome recently added.

Its been on linux ubuntu - the desktop is missing some code according to one site

last post 9/2018 here has something for ubuntu users to try

The reasons / solutions arent the same for everyone

Just type (chrome://restart) into your chrome browser and it might fix the problem.

As i said before if i ever experience the blank tab I just right click and open link/image in new tab - usually works - no idea what the issue is

Worst can scenario is you into safe mode / incognito mode with all add-ons disabled
