1. Real ale - infinitely preferable to the witch's widdle known as 'Lager'
2. The Premier League - most certainly. I'm lucky enough to have grown up watching football from the mid 1960's onwards. Ground facilities have improved. Sort of. You used to get a decent pie, a bottle of beer or an unclassifable scalding hot drink which could have been tea or coffee, which is why Bovril became the terrace drink of choice. But in the old days, players remained with teams, you used to 'walk up' to the local ground, there'd be characters on the terraces, from mad old grans with players names sewn all over their scarves, to blokes with foghorn voices shouting out family secrets about the refs. But clubs were OUR clubs. Jack Charlton, England World Cup winner and centre half with my beloved Leeds once saw me on Kings X station after a defeat at Highbury, and made a point of coming over to say hello to me and my Dad, and apologise that 'they hadn't won for us'. Imagine that happening now? Me neither. The PL has buggered up football, taking it away from the traditional working class roots, moving fixtures around at will, even the f'ing FA Cup Final doesn't kick off at 3 o'clock anymore. And the wages? If ever something indicated just how wrong this brand-loyalty, armchair expert consumer travesty has become, then £100k+ a week not being enough for some players says it all. Don't mention loyalty. They think it's a store card name. The sooner the rug gets pulled out from beneath them and it crashes to the ground, the better. Premier fucking League. |

You realise this means war!
No, honestly - I do get it. Musically it's not their best and it needed at least one more strong song (Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields Forever having been already culled). But for those of us of a certain age, the time it came out is etched on our memories. It was unlike anything that went before - in spirit, design and scope - and right at the limits of four track recording. That's what I love it for. |

I liked the cover version Candy Flip did of Strawberry Fields Forever in the 90's.

Gary Lineker. And his crisps are not great either.

Tom Petty. Granted, he could squeeze more out of three chords than most of his peers but then again - it was three chords. Free Fallin'. Ugh. It was so boring Howie refused to play on the track.
BTW, Richards was a genius. Jagger was lucky to have ever met Richards. |
