I was inspired today (not sure why) to head down to my favorite Italian Deli and get one of their meatball subs and some fries for lunch.

Then I got another sub to take home for dinner.

Tomorrow it is back to oatmeal and PBJ.

An excellent ice cream and one of my favorites by B&J. Currently they have a limited edition ice cream out (here in the US, I don't know about down under) called Cannoli. It is delicious and very rich. I can only eat it in small amounts. It may not be worth wacking somebody for it, but it is good.

Summer is shaping up nicely.
I was in the vicinity of a Burger King last night and decided to pick up some items for a taste test. I picked up the BBQ Rib sandwich, the Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich, and the Carolina Whopper.

First the Rib sandwich: It is a boneless, vaguely rib shaped patty with some char marks on it and a dose of sauce which I think is the Bullseye BBQ sauce and some pickles. The meat had a decent texture to it and the roll was better than the McRib. Not bad, but I wouldn't go out of my way for one.

Second the Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich: Not Carolina. Not even close. This is barbeque from a bucket, otherwise known as fauxque. Made in a factory in a large industrial process. This was overcooked or reheated far to long and was mushy. The sauce was the same thick, sweet, and tangy sauce used for the Rib sandwich. Not even close to what you could expect from Carolina. Basically it is a Kansas city tyope sauce.

Last was the Carolina Whopper: Again, not Carolina. not even close. It is basically a Whopper with a couple of strips of bacon (which isn't a bad thing) and a dollop of barbeque sauce. Again, the same sauce used for the above. I am not aware of any special burger in South Carolina, but I have had many a burger in North Carolina and what makes a North Carolina burger stand out is that it is usually topped with chili, mustard, onion, and cole slaw.

I have been fasting all day waiting for all of this to clear through my colon. Then I will go out and have some good barbeque.

Barbecue. The topic practical deserves its own thread. For our non-American friends, and about 75% of our Northern American friends, barbecue, as blueballs insinuates, is a regional product the mystifies about anybody who has never been to the southern United States. So Winebeavis will start a little primer for the good folks of VEF.

Let's start with what barbecue is not. Barbecue is not grilled anything with store bought sauce slathered on it. Throwing a few burgers and hot dogs on a charcoal (or worse --gas) grill and slopping sauce on it does not make those burgers barbecue. Although I hear people use the word "barbecue" in a different way to refer to a gathering of people where out door grilling will take place. Poor old winebeavis was abused as a child when his mother forced him to eat boiled spareribs finished on a charcoal grill and slathered with burned open pit bbq sauce. It was torture.

Barbecue means cooking meat using at low temperatures for long periods of time using a hardwood as fuel. Sauce is optional and almost never is purchased pre-made from the grocer. A good barbecue doesn't need sauce.

Pork is probably the easiest thing in the world to barbecue. It seems the pig was made for this purpose. A good pork shoulder seems to never dry out and takes to smoking so well and ribs go from being unedible to a delicacy. Although, being in Texas, it's hard for me to imagine beef brisket not on a menu in some form, either sliced or chopped. It's probably the only acceptable beef I'd ever barbecue. Beef is better prepared other ways, but I don't mind a bbq brisket slice every now and then. But for the most part, it's pork. . .even in Texas, most of the menu in most places are pork. I've never yet had poultry that had been barbecued. I'd rather just fry or do something else with the chicken.

Those nasty looking green things in them are indeed cucumbers. But heavily salted. They make a great contrast to the onions that I roasted with a spoon of honey.

I totally get your point. And yes, you are right, most people run away from my burgers when I do them like this. But the older I get the more I realize I am sort of fed up with "popular" tastes. So I do some experiments. Well, but that's just me.

Crisp/chip sandwiches. two slices of pan loaf a packet of cheese & onion and enjoy. I sometimes grate a little onion onto it to spice it.
