Native Americans might acquire a name by a great deed or attribute,Sometimes they would adopt the name of an admired relative. One of the Lakota who fought at the Little Big Horn was called Wooden Leg,He didn't have a wooden leg,He had taken the name of His uncle-Who also didn't have a wooden leg,He got the name because He could walk so far without tiring that people said He must have wooden legs..

How happy ar you with your currency? I am not talking about the strength of the dollar, just the size of the notes. The only time we see notes that are the same size is when we play Monopoly. The larger the value, the larger the size of the note.. And what about the poor bastards who are partially sighted or blind when all the bills are the same size? My eyesight is fine by the way.
p.s. any doubts I had about our new plastic notes were dispelled when I felt the braille bumps for the blind, and the manager for the local post office says they are much easier and faster to count at the end of the day.

Well, I think they are fine, I've never thought about currency for the blind, since we assume over here that someone nice will count change for them if necessary.

We used to have larger bills many years ago, but what we have now fits nicely into a hip wallet without much crimping and folding.

It's funny that in the last couple decades they've redesigned most of the currency with anti-counterfeiting measures, but the one dollar bill still looks the same. They ought to bring out a new one just so it looks more like the other stuff.

I barely use currency any more. I used to go to the bank regularly to get cash-- now its just about never. The biggest use for cash used to be paying taxi drivers-- they take credit cards now, and I take Uber, so that disappeared.

There's one toll bridge that needs cash but they're putting in electronic tags.

About my only real use of cash is paying some craftspeople for work that they'd just as soon keep of the books, and the odd stripper. Oh, and marijuana. Legal here, but very hard to pay except with cash. And farmer's markets . . .

So my beef with US currency is: pennies & nickels-- these are a waste of space. We could have used a good dollar coin for vending machines, but the US not having gotten itself together to get that done, the new vending machines now near field readers for Apple/Android Pay.

In reference to the dollar coin, the last time the US issued a new dollar coin, there was a multimillion dollar advertising campaign but the coin was shunned by the public. At the same time, the Netherlands replaced a popular banknote with a coin. No advertising, they just quit printing the note and started making the coins. No problem.

There are significant economic interests who make money based on printing paper dollars -- like Crane Paper-- and they have a lot of friends in Congress. As a result, the US never withdrew singles, and our one dollar coins were barely distinguishable from quarters. Compare with Canada's Loonie, or Britain's £ . . . in both cases, they got rid of the single unit paper currency, and replaced it with a highly distinctive coin.

The dollar coins are very much in demand for slot machines. At the rate our currency is devaluing, our small coins will disappear and be replaced by higher value coins that will replace small denominations of bills. Note that our self service car washes mainly use tokens now.

Why do American men, when they see a pretty girl, have to start a sentence with "Damn girl..."?

Most American men don't do that. But yeah, a certain set of 'em do.

Since you are talking about coins may I please ask a question of "our English friends"?

This has baffled and disgusted me for quite awhile. Not kidding. I have google this in the past:

Why is a pound called a quid. I believe they are the same thing and for quite awhile I could not figure out what the hell a quid was.

Does the word quid have the same meaning in England as it does in America? In America a quid is snot, luger, loogie, some amount of phlem or boogers usually coughed up and then spit out. "He just hocked a quid on me". At least among my friends this is what a quid was.
