Wishing for a Dreyfus Affair
.
Last shot regards a Sept. 7, 2007 tribute for Director Sydney Lumet, 33rd American Film Festival in Deauville, France Seeking "Kill Bill" reference for a Viveca Fox post I'm planning to prepare, the search results reminded me of how struck I was by Julia Dreyfus, when I first saw "Vol. 1" of the two-parter in 2003. I mean, will you just look at how snazzy she appears in the shot above, a variation of which I later noticed was offered by Marvelous Mod PoloMintGuy in the post above. In fact, I was so taken, I stormed into the theater manager's office and demanded a refund, explaining that the lopping off of one of her limbs in the movie was totally unacceptable. This is a woman to be enjoyed in her entirety. (I didn't get my money back, but it was the principle that mattered.) Post #1's Max Joker (nine whole years passed before another contribution was made in this very modest thread) wasn't kidding when he remarked, "Classically stunning natural French beauty." Oh, she's French? Then she must have allowed for her bare body to be put on display. (Right? That goes with being French; oo-la-la, and vive la difference and all of that other Frenchiness.) So I looked at her filmography, especially paying attention to her earlier works (as you know, actresses are most prone to make the sacrifice at career beginnings, hoping to get a leg up in the industry by offering legs and other bodily parts), and I was surprised to see the first two works were Japanese productions. Ah, it hit me! (It has been a while since I watched the Kill Bill films.) This was one key reason (aside from, no doubt, Tarantino's infatuation) why she was selected for her role, given how she is one Occidental actress who has fluency with the Japanese language. She moved to Japan, and according to her IMDb bio page's trivia section, chummed it up with Director Quentin Tarantino during a Japanese film festival in the 1990s. Promoting the Nov. 2009 Tokyo premiere of "Inglourious Basterds" If you look at her film and TV résumé, she has appeared in practically nothing else, save for the Tarantino flicks. (A reported quote by her: "I have done several films, but I've mostly done TV, and 99% of the work I've done has been in Japan." By the way, I see the long anticipated Kill Bill: Vol. 3 appears to finally be in the works.) Given her modest screen output, the odds of our making a fuss over Dreyfus in ways where we most prefer acting as fuss buckets have been reduced to practically zero! The only thing I could find that approaches smutty territory was a quick shot in 2009's Inglourious Basterds (and I'm surprised the view has been overlooked in Posts #2 and #3 in this four-post thread, since this film was the focus of those two posts), where the forty four year old showed some insignificant skin, but importantly in a sexual setting. The fellow was meant to be Dr. Josef Goebbels, and per WWII gossip, as the manipulator of Nazi cinema, the handicapped little runt did take advantage of his position to bed women that would normally be completely out of his league. By the way, get a load of the actor chosen to play Goebbels; makes one suddenly develop a deeper appreciation for Martin Kosleck (pictured at right; I see he has a minor "cult" following). Yet if you think this casting choice was not quite on the mark, what about the actor Tarantino chose to portray Hitler? If you look up 1944's The Hitler Gang (where Kosleck appeared in his signature role of Goebbels), they picked a dead ringer for the Nazi dictator, which was not hard to do, given Adolf's bland features. It's as if directors want to drive home what monsters the Nazis were, by choosing the most repulsive looking actors. (Okay, we get it. We get it.) Life-taking Nazis vs. life-affirming Julia Dreyfus; what a contrast. The belle is currently fifty six. What a shame the screen was not graced more plentifully by her presence, leading to the other shame of her pitifully short VEF thread. .
